5-6 Gates Lee will just give Neji trouble. His reactions aren't quick enough to counter that speed. His Byakugan won't be able to track his movements so Lee wins.

It's rather extreme given how 5th Gate Lee would've broken his bones, but it was implied to have been saved specifically for Neji. That's a possibility. I believe he had it before-hand considering Gaara and Neji were implied to be equals during the Prelims and Databook hypes it up as being an absolute defense on par with Gaara's at the time.

Also i would like to add that if gaara's sand armor was able to hold up against gated lee's attacks without breaking his bones or crushing him , then neji's chakra shield shown in the above scan would no doubt hold up against it just as well if not better.

So yea , prelims lee would no doubt beat neji but finals neji would no doubt beat prelims lee and kishi pretty much illustrated that for us with their rivalry , neji's attainment of Kaiten and this scan.

The contradiction with the bold is that if gaara and neji were portrayed as equals and both had similar defenses in the form of sand armor and chakra armor/shield respectively , then by portrayal neji would still come out the victor similarly to gaara , his equal , bein able to outlast the gates with his defenses the same way gaara did.

Neji can constantly release large amounts of chakra from his entire body , and knock away physical attacks just with that.
No need for neji to even spin , in order to counter/outlast lees gates.

I highly doubt his chakra shield alone would allow him to resist multiple hits from 5th Gated Lee like Gaara's Sand Armor did or else a punch from CE KN0 Naruto wouldn't have rendered him almost unable to move despite resisting the impact of it with Kaiten.

The Databook and the scan you presented both conclude that its Neji's Kaiten that has comparable defense to Gaara's, not that his chakra shield is comparable to Gaara's absolute defense. Since Neji was implied to be Gaara's equal during the Chuunin Exams, it's fair to say that Neji also possessed an absolute defense comparable to Gaara's as well in the form of Kaiten and 5G Lee was literally portrayed to be above Neji. First , neji expelled a thin layer of chakra to stop naruto's strongest base punch which would've sent gaara crashing to the floor and cracked his armor the same way his kick sent jin gaara flying.
What are u even talking about at bold? anyway neji can choose to release a larger amount of chakra than wat was used to stop naruto's punch , u can clearly see the chakra expanding around , forming into a dome before neji even began his spin (middle left panel).

The layer used against naruto's surprise punch (Key word: Surprise) , was simply a thin release , Chakra shield can be expanded and released continuously to form a constant dome of protective chakra .

We saw this very same thing happening to neji's chakra after he expanded the thin chakra layer after naruto's punch.

Against lee neji would have more than enough time to expand a large chakra shield thick and wide enough to tank his attacks.

First both the databook and manga gauges both absolute defenses as a whole , meaning chakra shield/kaiten along with sand shield/sand armor are considered when comparisons are made between the two.

[/B] Manga and databook directly states that neji stops the opponents attacks by releasing a large amount of chakra from his body , " This Stops the opponents attack"just like gaara's shield of sand would.

Just because Gaara's defense withstood 5G Lee's attacks doesn't imply the same for Neji's because they're used differently.

Bold is exactly my point , unlike gaara's thin sand armor which can be broken , chakra shield can be used to form a continuous defense by constantly pumping out more chakra outwards and can be made thin or wide.
U can clearly see that the chakra layer used in tentens illustration of the tech is much wider than the layer used to stop naruto's punch and we've seen that it can get much wider without needing the spin to expand it.

Neji's expanded chakra shield would provide a much better defense against lee's attacks compared to the thin sand armor since its thick chakra bein expelled continuously from within the body that can be expanded widely unlike the sand armor and neji can choose to continuously push out as much chakra as he needs to while lee is busy pounding away at the chakra similarly to wat he did to gaara.

Compared to that , gaara's sand armor is just a thin layer of sand even thinner than the chakra layer used by neji to block naruto's punch , while chakra shield itself is more similar to the shield of sand.

But unlike the shield of sand which failed to keep up with gaara , chakra shield is expelled from within neji which makes it a much more useful defense against lee.

Neji never had kaiten in the prelims , training was shown months after and wat ur sayin about portrayal doesn't mean he had kaiten when we kno kakashi also labeled neji a monster in his own way without even knowing of kaiten and this was bacause neji was simply a beast in his taijutsu. Even gai's statement reassures the notion that neji was far above lee due to his reflexes , skill and taijutsu which is the same reason why kakashi hyped him.
