His ruggadized appearance is owed in part to the countless battles he had survived. His hair is kept clean, and of mild length, while he regularly grooms and maintains his thick and manly goatee.
Personality
He speaks as a leader, and commands with an authority. It seems almost natural to him, leading men. A modest man by nature though, he almost always refuses a position of authority. Though he will naturally fall into one in the heat of combat.

Histoy:
Nathan Algern, a man from the Far West. His past before he ventured into the Land of Iron is much of a mystery. Though his arrival is not. He was part of a military squadron, exploring and charting the area as a new land. What the unit did not know, however, was that the land was inhabited.
It may have been the second, or third day, Nathan really couldn't recall in his stories, that they were ambushed by Samurai. The men had attacked his unit, and within moments decimated it. Before long, Nathan was the last man standing, and still fighting valiantly.
As he was about to be slain, one of the Samurai had stopped the life ending blow. He was to be spared, and taken as a prisoner. He was kept in solitude with minimal water and far less food than a man should have.
Yet every time the guard bringing his food came, Nathan would insist on talking. It was around the end of the first month that a high ranking official came and spoke to Nathan.
Nathan's capabilities proved versatile, and through charisma alone he negotiated looser imprisonment. He was allowed to freely roam the prison. Talking to the guards, he learned their names, and built rapport.
It didn't take long before the guards would give him extra food, bring him books, and other devices. It took even less time for the prison commander to notice these actions, and he was released on one condition.
And so, Nathan Algern became a Samurai. He was trained in the ways of a Samurai, and honed his skills to perfection. He knew he would never be able to return home, and decided this would be his new life. He wore his new life, armor, and swords with pride and dignity.
One of his first missions as a Samurai was to investigate this Mount Myobokuzan. A truly difficult place to reach, and one of great mystery. So he accepted his mission and embarked.
Yet, what one would normally find a near impossible mission, Nathan prevailed. His cunning and land navigation skills brought him to the mountain base where he was greeted by talking toads.
As if things could get stranger for Nathan. Yet he interacted with these toads, and they invited him to Mount Myobokuzan, where he learned of their ways. As a final act to the toads, he swore alliance to them.
