When he switched With his sword he shifted places with his blade. The space he was shifting with was occupied by the blade;consequently, the sword took his place and stabbed madara. In gaiden ge shifted spaces against shin and against naruto and against kaguya.
Only difference between air and objects is that air is not as dense but its still something that exists.
That being said sasuke switches places with essentially anything in his range

Sasuke can teleport himself by switching other objects. He has also shown the ability to bring objects to himself as well. While Flying Thunder God teleports what-ever is touching the seal/rite to another seal/rite.

If you look at it from another angle, Sasuke's S/T is basically an advanced form of Narikawari lmao.

I think his amenojikara works in different ways. 1-he can teleport with objects. 2-teleport people to him etc and 3-teleport with nothing.
