Chapter 15: Two Brothers
Koichi continues to stare with incredible shock at the sight of his brother. He wondered if the pain from the sealing was causing him to see illusions but he quickly brushed off his denial and came to the horrifying realization.
“Koji...what's going on?” Koichi says. The only words he could sensibly muster up with all his confusion and stress felt from the sealing of the Ichibi within him. Koji's silence was mirrored by the entire room, nobody else came to speak. “What the hell is going on?!” Koichi yells, as his voice echos through the entire room.
“Koichi, I--”
Before Koji could finish his sentence, Koichi was on top of him, holding his brother by the collar and glaring at him wide eyed. “Why the hell are you here?! Why did you help them?! Why would you help them do this to me?!” Koichi yelled.
Suddenly Koichi is yanked back by chain by the leader of the Anbu. “Calm yourself boy.” the shinobi says plainly.
Koji gets up and looks at his brother. “Right after they took you, Temari-sama told me the situation and what they were going to do to you.” Koji says.
“And you just agreed to let them do this?! Better yet, decided to help them!” Koichi says with anger trying to free himself from the chains.
“No,” Koji says defensively; “I swear I tried to do something but...” Koji stops, looking at Temari, who now bares a face of guilt, as she looks at Koichi and Koji. Koji turns his head back around to Koichi but brings it down again to the floor, avoiding eye contact. “This is for the best Koichi-nii.” Koji says with a low voice.
“For the best?! You think them sealing this thing inside me was for the best?! You little--”
“Koichi stop!” Temari demands. Koichi turns his head to Temari, and even her look of utter seriousness doesn't shake him. “This was something that was bound to happen, we tried to prevent this as long as we could but other then Ichigo you were the only one who could replace him as Jinchuuriki.” Temari says. “Your parents tried to prevent it as well but the village just can't afford to loose a Jinchuuriki, it would mean certain destruction of Suna, even with our success we still remain to be the lower tire of the Five Great Nations.”
“Wait, my parents?” Koichi says stunned.
“Koji truly did try to stop us, he even restored to trying to kill me before I told him about your parents and your background.” Temari states. She turns and looks at Koji who is completely depressed and isn't even paying attention. As she sighs she begins to tell Koichi about their family. “You and your parents are from a native clan of the Land of Wind. The Shichiyo clan, was once a powerful clan with extraordinary abilities that seemed almost mystical. Along with being masters of genjutsu, that rivaled that of Konoha's Kurama and Uchiha clans, your clan has been known for it's unique chakra.” Temari says.
“Unique chakra?” Koichi asks.
“Not much is known about it, but the chakra your clan possessed was compatible with Bijuu. Instead of needing large amounts to suppress the chakra of the beasts, your chakra links with the Bijuu and actually it becomes a part of you which the beasts cannot tear away from or else they risk destroying themselves. No other chakra on the planet has such ability to actually destroy a Bijuu, which is what makes it so mystical. The beast doesn't attempt to roam free for fear of killing it's tamer, which would in turn implies their own deaths. This was demonstrated by the first Shukaku Jinchuuriki. He was your Great-Great Grandfather, he was able to contain the Shukaku and he knew the powers of his chakra. When he was killed, the Shukaku was almost destroyed, but it managed to be extracted from him before that happened. The downside to this was that the chakra link between your grandfather and the Shukaku was taken as well, which was the only way the Shukaku would remain alive. That link gave the Shukaku more chakra and power, as would any other Shichiyo Jinchuuriki after their death, which is why no others from your clan would become Jinchuuriki unless absolutely necessary.” Temari explains.
“So why now?” Koichi says with a cooled down attitude. “Why is it that I'm a Jinchuuriki now if we're always the last resorts.” Koichi asked, his anger still present but his composure is calm.
“Well...The thing is the Shichiyo clan has never been a part of Suna. It was still independent when Suna was founded. As they knew very well of the Jinchuuriki situation inside the villages and wanted to be kept from political affairs and war, they remained separate, however some of them came over to the village. Those who didn't died off during the first Great War. After the other countries found out about your extraordinary chakra, several assassination missions were taken, most were defeated but not without casualties, eventually they all died off and only the few that were in the village remained. You two are the only ones left in your clan's existence at this point.” Temari says solemnly. Koichi looks with shock, however Koji pays no attention, having heard everything already. “The reason why you're Jinchuuriki now is because there is no other way. The second Jinchuuriki after your grandfather was just like Ichigo, unstable because of his chakra being barely enough to sustain it. Gaara was the next Jinchuuriki and was a great compatible match because of his naturally high chakra, however once it was extracted from him, he was no longer compatible, his chakra was ripped from him as well when it was extracted and he never had enough to regain control if the demon was put back inside of him. You were the absolute only resort Koichi.”
“Why not Koji?” Koichi says in spite, looking hatefully at his brother. Koji's head shoots up with surprise as he looks at his brother. “We're twins, why not pick him?”
“Koichi!” Temari snaps.
“Maybe it was because I would've fought to my own death to stop this no matter what the damn situation was. Whether we had this special chakra or not, I wouldn't have let this happen as long as there was a breath in my body.” Koichi says, returning Koji's look of depression and guilt. “I get it now, you knew Koji wouldn't have done the same so it would've been easier right?”
“Koichi, there's something you should know--”
“You have it wrong brother.” Koji says interrupting Temari. “We have to think of the village and this is what the village needs...I would've accepted this job Koichi, but for the very reason you said you wouldn't let this happen, I knew that wouldn't be a possibility...not without loosing you.”
“You're a coward!” Koichi yells at Koji.
“Koichi...I won't let you be afraid.” Koji says, making Koichi go wide eyed. “You forget that we're still twins and that I can sense everything you're feeling. You're afraid, afraid of being treated like a weapon instead of the loyal shinobi you dream of being, afraid of being ostracized by the village you put your life on the line for everyday. I can sense your pain and your fear...but I promise you that I won't let that happen, just as you say you'd defend me and the village with your life, I will defend that pride of yours and I will take away your fear.” Koji states looking his brother in the eye with his normal expression.
Koichi stands up and the shinobi releases him from the chains. The look on Koichi's face is dark and depressed, filled with anger but slowly and surely calming back his normal. He walks towards Koji and stands beside him. “How the hell can you expect me to trust you?” Koichi says just before he walks past Koji heading towards his cloths, proceeding to leave the room.
Koji clinches his fist as more tears begin to fall down his face. “*Koichi...can you not read me anymore?*”
~At Kazekage Residence~
Night has come to Suna after its long day. As Gaara sits at his desk filing the paperwork, he contemplates everything that has occurred and thinks about Koichi. At that moment he hears a knock at the door and Kankuro enters the room.“Shouldn't you be at the hospital Kankuro?” Gaara says, looking at his wound.
“Shouldn't you?” Kankuro returns, knowing of Gaara's bout with the Shukaku.
“What do you want?” Gaara asks.
“I heard about Ichigo, and I can't find Temari anywhere...I take it, Koichi...” Kankuro says looking at Gaara. Gaara doesn't look up at Kankuro, he simply continues his work without replying to his brother. “I'll take that as a yes then.” Kankuro says sighing depressingly.
“Why do you care Kankuro? You didn't seem to enthusiastic about training genin in the first place, it's only been a little over a month since all of this.” Gaara says.
“Still, they've grown on me. I don't like it but they're my kids, my squad. I can't help but worry.” Kankuro says plainly. “Plus,” he begins, looking at Gaara's eyes, looking past the rouse he tries to put up to hide his real feelings; “I know what he's going to be going through. More specifically I know how much Koji is going to worry about him as well.”
Gaara stops shuffling through the papers, but doesn't look up at Kankuro.
“This couldn't have been avoided I agree, but I'm also worried about you Gaara. You have to have felt something, going facing Shukaku. It still hurts, that's why you sent Temari again like last time.” Kankuro says. “I know you didn't want to do this, that you'd rather not to be in this situation, even now after all these years as Kazekage, you still can't shut that chapter of your life can you?” Gaara begins to clinch his fist. “It's about mother isn't it--”
“Get out Kankuro.” Gaara says softly but with a demanding tone.
Kankuro complies with his brother's order and begins to walk out. “Gaara, I'm sorry the only thing I can do for you is tell you about her. It'll never replace actually seeing her or being with her...But when she held you, she held you tighter then she ever held me or Temari, at least you were able to experience her love, that's the most important thing she made sure all of us felt from her.”
As Kankuro closes the door behind him tears drip form Gaara's face to the pages below.
Sunagakure is now in the process of repairing itself from it's vicious attacks, however, the warring wounds of Koichi and Koji have just begun and the Kazekage's scars from his past still burn even after years of healing.
Author's Note:
A lot of long dialogue in this chapter, it's important for later development in the story. This was more of a history chapter mixed in with a little of the sentimental relationship between two sets of siblings, Koichi and Koji and Gaara and Kankuro and Temari. I hope you all enjoy it, to all who read/comment/rep this post I thank you.
