So there has been lots of discussion and fights over favorite characters, who soloes whom, etc... but one thing we can all agree on is that Kishi is great at creating his character personalities.

What are the MBTI types of the main Naruto characters?

In this thread I want to analyze the personalities of a few main characters with the widely-used Myer-Brigges test. You can read about the , and determine your own personality type .

Some more about the MBTI personality test:

The personality test operates on the foundation of four dichotomies -

1. Extraversion vs. Introversion: How outgoing a person is - whether they feel more energized when around lots of company, or when they're alone.

2. Sensing vs iNtuition: How the person perceives the world - whether they see things as is, at face value, or more in terms of their relationships with other things, contexts etc.

3. Thinking vs. Feeling: How the person makes judgments - with their head or their heart.

4. Judging vs. Perceiving: How the person approaches the world - Judging types tend to proactively tackle their surroundings while Perceiving types prefer to respond based on their surroundings.

All this creates 16 combinations of 4 letters, each with their quirks and nuances.

Let's apply this model to Naruto!

Naruto Uzumaki - "The Inspirer" (Dominant: Extraverted iNtuition)

He has a strong sense of values, very outgoing and outward, very warm and enthusiastic, great people skills - the master of TNJ ;) sometimes has problems with judging people... we see this in his naive view of Sasuke as his friend in times when Sasuke was far from being that:

Most ENFPs have great people skills. They are genuinely warm and interested in people, and place great importance on their inter-personal relationships. ENFPs almost always have a strong need to be liked. Sometimes, especially at a younger age, an ENFP will tend to be "gushy" and insincere, and generally "overdo" in an effort to win acceptance.

We see Naruto trying to win acceptance in all the wrong ways; painting on walls, playing pranks on teachers, being naughty in class, etc, etc. Of course, Naruto's lack of parental figures intensified this trait.

Some examples of Naruto's ability to inspire others:

and virtually everyone including Neji, Hinata, Lee, Tsunade, Shikamaru, Nagato, etc.

They have a strong need to be independent, and resist being controlled or labelled. They need to maintain control over themselves, but they do not believe in controlling others. Rather than controlling others, Naruto would rather be friends with them, and firmly despises anyone who tries to control selfishly - a natural peace keeper and leader.

Since emotional excitement is usually an important part of the ENFP's life, and because they are focused on keeping "centered", the ENFP is usually an intense individual, with highly evolved values.

His weakest point is introverted sensing, which means that Naruto learns more through experience rather than theory, and takes in the world directly rather through introspective analysis and implicit context. He is very skeptical of that which he cannot sense directly, such as what the SO6P was trying to get at with the reincarnations:

Has trouble understanding SO6P's vague wordings:

And, interestingly, it is these weak points (as SO6P said: "Compared to the previous reincarnations, you are eccentric and a little bit stupid") which might save the shinobi world from the darkness.

Sasuke Uchiha- "The Mechanic" - (Dominant: Introverted Thinking)

He is focused on living internally and applies high levels of analysis for mainly practical purposes. We see this side of Sasuke most recently during the war arc where he would rather take the "practical" way of saving Naruto rather than those with little power for the "greater good" of saving the world.

Although they do not respect the rules of the "System", they follow their own rules and guidelines for behavior faithfully. They will not take part in something which violates their personal laws.

i.e. Even while "working" for the Akatsuki, Sasuke maintained his own agenda and his own perceived and stubborn sense of righteousness.

ISTPs avoid making judgments based on personal values - they feel that judgments and decisions should be made impartially, based on the fact.

Sasuke does not believe that ties to Team 7 or any other "bonds" have any value

They are not naturally tuned in to how they are affecting others. They do not pay attention to their own feelings, and even distrust them and try to ignore them, because they have difficulty distinguishing between emotional reactions and value judgments.

Sasuke saves Karin with a power triggered by his emotion for Team 7, rather than his coherent judgement:

despite having been told to leave his teammate die...

Sasuke's inferior extraverted feeling (Naruto's strongest point) explains Sasuke's "cold" behavior from the very beginning; unlike Naruto, he is almost never guided by emotion in the moment. Meanwhile, his extroverted intution is suppressed unless he is in a sketchy or dangerous situation (as in the case of thinking of Team 7 while saving Karin).

An ISTP who is over-stressed may exhibit rash emotional outbursts of anger, or on the other extreme may be overwhelmed by emotions and feelings which they feel compelled to share with people (often inappropriately):

Sasuke really stressed after Danzou fight:

Overwhelmed after Itachi fight:

Sakura Haruno - - "The Caregiver" (Dominant: Extraverted Feeling)

Deals with people and situations based on how she feels about them; tends to form mostly supportive judgment about people - Sakura generally has an optimistic attitude towards others and relies on her feelings. Her feelings likewise sometimes get the best of her in the most serious situations such as her attempt to kill Sasuke or her failed attempt to stop Naruto from chasing Sasuke back by confessing her love to him.

The ESFJ's strong desire to be liked and for everything to be pleasant makes them highly supportive of others.

Even if the situation looks grim, Sakura will try to cheer others up, such as when in Part 1, Sasuke had escaped and Sakura tried to cheer Naruto up despite being sad herself.

ESFJs are such caring individuals, that they sometimes have a hard time seeing or accepting a difficult truth about someone they care about.

Pretty much Sakura for the past 50 or so chapters.

They are hurt by indifference and don't understand unkindness.

Explains why she cries a lot.

They need approval from others to feel good about themselves.

Sakura longs to get approval from Sasuke and Naruto and the NV by taking the initiative:

They have a strong need to be liked, and to be in control. They are extremely good at reading others, and often change their own manner to be more pleasing to whoever they're with at the moment. Unlike their ENFJ cousin, they don't have Intuition to help them understand the real consequences of their actions.

However in general Sakura is good at reading others and understanding their emotions:

Their dominant function demands structure and organization, and seeks closure.

This explains why Sakura always punches Naruto when he doesn't follow directions. This also explains why Sakura wants "closure" in reconciling her confusing feelings for Sasuke and for Team 7 to finally be back together. This, of course, is also part of her very compassionate nature.

------

Alright, that's enough analysis for now! Coming up next, Kakashi and Itachi!

Feel free to speculate personality types of your favorite characters based on list I was using. No matter how much we all argue about characters, we gotta admit that Kishi created pretty darn awesome personalities!

Thanks for reading.:yayy:

Thanks for this good thread. :)

Never heard of this MBTI test.

And you analyzed them well, I now understand these characters a little bit further.

No i believe Naruto is ESFJ Intuitive means he would see possibility and perceives the world through thought rather than his 5 senses, as Naruto i a kinetic learner unable to grasp abstract concepts it is impossible to see him as an N type.
Sasuke is closer to INTJ. He lives in his mind and INTJ's through my personal experience are masters off prioritizing and rationalizing even attempting to isolate and ignore emotions but that only serves to add to the stress and make them blow up even more violently. I firmly believe Sasuke has developed his preciving Nature so that the combination of NTP means that in his value system N will make him see possibility's T will allow him to see what needs to be done and J or p will try to give him an avenue to achieve said goals when he doesn't it infuriates him
Sakura is ENFJ. She learns through studying and collecting data like the book worm she is. ENFJ is the giver they care more for others than themselves leading to them sacrificing what they want Ex her trying to kill Sasuke causing inner turmoil.
Nice thread but your confusing S for N and vice versa. Just because a type has certain qualities you can identify with a character do not take it for face value by definition according to jungs we carry bits of all 16 types in us.
If i was to MBTI a charecter MADARA-ENTP-THE VISIONARY
People with the ENTP personality type are often called devil’s advocates—and for good reason. Forming around 3% of the population, ENTPs absolutely love to argue and do not really care that much what the argument is about, as long as it is fun. They may not actually support the idea they are arguing for, but they may decide to go against the prevailing opinion, seeing this as a mental exercise. ENTPs are very quick-witted and original, which gives them a great advantage in debates, academia, and politics. However, they also tend to do very well in many other areas that require a willingness to challenge the existing ideas and juggle multiple arguments. ENTPs are usually very direct and honest. They do not really care about being seen as sensitive or compassionate, so their honesty may be quite brutal sometimes. ENTPs say what they think and do not mince their words. Furthermore, they dislike people who try to beat around the bush, especially if they are about to ask the ENTP for a favour. Consequently, ENTPs tend to be respected, but not necessarily liked; many people not only tolerate being lied to, they actually hope for and need to hear a lie in certain situations. Society tends to put feelings, sensitivities, and comfort above the unpleasant truth, which is likely to frustrate many ENTPs.

A tendency to consider careful or meticulous thinkers as unworthy plodders or time wasters.
Blindness to the needs and feelings of others not directly involved in the ENTP's current area of interest.
A lack of sensitivity to the feelings and ways of those who might need reassurance, security or commitment.
The inability to deal carefully and calmly with the finer details of a situation or work in progress.
Tendency to become overly annoyed by minor setbacks or small things that have to be set right before the goal can be realized.
A tendency to be arrogant or boastful, or to demean those who cannot see the same answers.
Can often find themselves in bad situations by too quickly taking a big step forward or by being "too smart for their own good".
Madara is extremely Arrogant and firmly believes in his mental capacity he values the expedient and quick way of getting things done. But as someone who is both cocky and smart he wants to enjoy himself as an N type he views the world through impression and so his 5 sense are dulled by his thoughts he doesn't FEEL so he needs action and combat to excite him.

First of all, thanks for your reply and for thinking this through. However I have to disagree with you. If you read the part on Naruto again, you will see that a big problem for ENFP is understanding abstract concepts. They need to learn everything on practice, and that is the way Naruto learns best. You also have to admit that Naruto is a natural leader and he has a gift for inspiration. I don't agree that Naruto is ESFJ at all, especially if you read this about ESFJ's:

ESFJs respect and believe in the laws and rules of authority, and believe that others should do so as well. They're traditional, and prefer to do things in the established way, rather than venturing into unchartered territory. Their need for security drives their ready acceptance and adherence to the policies of the established system. This tendency may cause them to sometimes blindly accept rules without questioning or understanding them.

This bold part is contrary to everything Naruto has ever done, pretty much. If anything, this is Sakura's behavior, she wants people to "stay in line" and to generally follow the rules, this is especially evident in Part 1, but Part 2 is full of it too.

ESFJ: Their dominant function demands structure and organization, and seeks closure.

Structure and organization? Definitely not Naruto. Again, sounds like Sakura to me. ;)

Again thanks for the thorough reply, Sasuke could be a mix of the two. I definitely agree that he has the INTJ leader quality:

INTJs are natural leaders, although they usually choose to remain in the background until they see a real need to take over the lead. When they are in leadership roles, they are quite effective, because they are able to objectively see the reality of a situation, and are adaptable enough to change things which aren't working well. They are the supreme strategists - always scanning available ideas and concepts and weighing them against their current strategy, to plan for every conceivable contingency.

"Objectively see reality of situation and take over the lead" = this?

Perhaps he is indeed a mix. :D

As for Sakura being ENFJ ("the Giver") some things just don't add up. Like this:

The ENFJ may feel quite lonely even when surrounded by people. This feeling of aloneness may be exacerbated by the tendency to not reveal their true selves.

Sakura never feels lonely (but does feel very said at unkindness and coldness - cue ESFJ). She is one of those people who has a good inner optimism and whether or not surrounded by people she feels at peace and cared for. I mean she could have parts of ENFJ, but I really think that the ESFJ profile fits her more.
