Your forgetting that Tobi's body has obviously been modified or is part of zetsu. During the fight with the 4th his hand dripped off. This could easily have been a way to repair the damage to Obito's body.Nope, he's not an important character or even a supporting character. It's not likely that he would be Tobi.
I'm pretty sure you don't know what a plot hole is. In a good story, there aren't any plot holes. When we suggest that Tobi = Obito is a plot hole, it's because it doesn't mage any logical sense with the rest of the story which has already been established.
It's like we were watching Star Wars and Darth Vader was actually Luke Skywalker. That would be a plot hole because the story establishes Luke's father as Darth Vader, so it's logically impossible for Luke to be Darth Vader.
In this case, it's logically impossible for Tobi to be Obito considering the timeline of events, the age of Obito, and the character development of Tobi. That's why it would be a plot hole if Tobi turned out to be Obito.
The difference is that Obito's body was crushed by giant rocks and it would take a miracle for even his eye to remain intact and usable, much less his entire body.
It's entirely possible that Tobi is really Izuna (which is the most logical guess so far), and that he recovered Obito's eye after he died.
I think hid identity is a mixture of a lot of the theories. Izuna is the mastermind, Obito is the body, and Zetsu is the medium is which his body was repaired. We haven't gotten a back story on zetsu like we have other akatsuki members. I think he is the missing link in Tobi's plot.
