At the point Hinata got beat up he was already at a low point. Hinata getting beaten up was not the only thing that contributed to Naruto losing it. It was more of the hair the broke the camels back. Not trying to steal her moment but if anyone else close to Naruto went down there he would have lost it imo.

Also Naruto has gone slightly into ninetails mode in part 1 when gaara had sakura against the tree. I think thats the most danger she has ever been in when it comes to dying.

Like i said before, the hair that broke the camels back, he came back to the village destroyed many dead along with his sensei. Then he was being TnJ by pain which drove him deeper into a mixture of depression and anger. Now when you see one of your friends come down and defend you with their life and be killed I want to know who would not have lost their mind.

Why it would be far from the truth?
That's Naruto with the same set up & mood; if the person who jumped in and said "i am not afraid to protect you because you are my beloved comrade" or something like that he would do the same.
Or what; Naruto is suppose to care more about Hinata than he cares for Shikamaru, Lee, etc. (at that point of time) because they can't be shipped with him?
They also proven to be comrades of him who cares; why would he not go berserk; giving the same conditions?
