I think Naruto is building up his feelings for Hinata at this point as they spend more time together on the battlefield. It seems like all throughout the manga/anime they don't have very many missions together and time together in general.

I thought that was because of team seven breaking apart.

Sakura lied to his face, he found out about the decision to kill sasuke but didn't faint until Sai and gaara told him things were beyond repair and that Sakura was going to do the job herself.

On topic though, Naruto also went three tails for Gaara I believe before Kakashi came in and stopped it. Naruto goes to ridiculous lengths for his friends and it seems universal to me.

OT- Its not Hinata's death alone, Naruto sprouted 8-9 of his tails when pein used chikabu tensai. But thats also because of the death of Jiraiya and kakashi. He became truly lost because he couldnt answer Nagato's question. His inner conflict led to the release of his tails- Hinata getting hurt was the trigger.
