My point is that he is against IT because it's a lie. Even though it would have gotten rid of pestilence,war,famine, and death(before the Zetsu aspect came in). However, he will support a lie that will protect the village and Uchiha's image.

Think about it, if the "crushed" spawned from his rivalry with Sasuke, how is he not being untrue to himself. And he realizes he always had feelings for Hinata : LMAO

From rereading some chapters, I think he started to understood that she was sticked to sasuke before the time lapse whe she got tsunade back for the seat of 5th. His look had a lot of meaning. When sauce went to oro, the crushed sakura give him the hint that she was way more serious on him than him on her.
Is he an hypocrite? Nope. At early stages, it was a physical young crush nothin serious. He understood that the cause was lost pretty soon then since it was a routine and that he is dense, he continued the running gag by habit and for hiding that he failed to win her. The stuff from rivalry is a pure lie. Not to him but to her. I don't think the never giving up Naruto would say that he gave up on her. He have some pride. So he build a lie. Pretty common.

The problem is that you assume that it's better/easier to evade problems than actually deal with them.

Think about it some more:
Being stuck in a dream and wrapped in a cocoon = No interaction, thus no spread of infectious diseases or people killing each other. Hence getting rid of pestilence and war.
You're forgetting about the tree's role, which is feeding people it's vital energy to keep them alive forever like with the Gedo Mazo and Madara(databook confirms this). Thus getting rid of famine and death.
