A. Naruto is shown training at night. At this point he knows that if he moves, he can no longer absorb nature energy. Here Naruto is training in order to see how he can incorporate Sage mode into a fight. Naruto says that he has to "make sure no one sees me" , and we see two different frames of Naruto. One without the necklace not in sage mode, and the other with the necklace and in sage mode.
B. People have argued that the second frame with Naruto not in sage mode and exhausted is a flashback. But nowhere in the previous mangas do we see Naruto without his necklace on. I believe that Naruto was practicing "sitting back" while his shadow-clones did all the training. By doing this, he is able to continuously practice using rasen-shurrikan.
C. Remember when J-man showed Naruto the difference in rasengan from sage-2, to stage-3. He smashed rasengan on the tree and showed Naruto the criss-crossed marks. When in stage 3, rasengan blew a hold right through it.
D. Pa-toad tells Naruto how J-man used Sage mode in a fight, and Naruto was surprised, because he was trying to figure it out for himself. So this frame makes my point at #1 correct, that Naruto was practing sage mode, and figuring out how to use it in battle.
E. I think Naruto ultimately changed the shape of rasengan. By flattening it. Which would explain how it sliced through the mountain in #2, but made a "poof" in #1. Similar to when J-man showed him rasengan. Because Naruto at that moment hadn't perfected the new version of rasen-shurrikan when it is thrown. Now Naruto has perfected Rasen-shurrikan.
F. I think that Naruto has surpassed J-man because he doesn't need to remain still, or use pa-toad for that matter. He can use shadow clones.
