Itachi, really Itachi?. He is the worst to have an answer. That's because he is village bound.

Itachi loved the village because, despite the darkness, it was something that allowed the people to come together.
Hashirama described what a "village" and "shinobi" was.

It's not a thing where he protects it for being his home, he recognized a village as a nessecary step towards peace, a group of people who come together to be together, instead of his own family, who wanted to wage war whatever the cost.
