In this thread, I'm going to run over key points about the animation in both moieties of the anime.

The first point to note is that the animation studio, Studio Pierrot, have a conglomerate of associated animators of whom they hire to make and direct the episodes. In order to provide good animation for the most action-packed or significant moments in the series, Studio Pierrot use cheaper animators most of the time and then accordingly enlarge the budget on hiring more notable animators; like Atsushi Wakabayashi and Hiroyuki Yamashita.

Wakabayashi is one of the most highly regarded animators in Japan; being responsible for the Hiruzen vs. Orochimaru fight and Naruto vs. Sasuke fight in Part 1.

Yamashita primarily has took charge of Part 2 scenes:

The next point I'd like to stress concerns the difference between artwork and animation.

- Artwork: The visual appearance of scenes (i.e. Are the characters well drawn? Are the colours accurate? Is it consistent?)
- Animation: This is the fps. This is how fluid (or not!) the motion is. If movements go smoothly, they have good animation but if it's "jittery", it's poorly animated.

If we look at this example of less than great animation, we can see the movement of Madara's hair is somewhat stilted compared with the above example:

The artwork is also poorer. Take a closer look at the Sharingan design and you'll notice the tomoe are inconsistent in size and alignment.

To finish, I'd just like to mention a couple of other very notable animators.

Masayuki Kouda. (Mainly Part 2)

A personal favourite, he has a distinct artwork style that is consistent and mixes nicely with the smooth animation he provides.

Hirofumi Suzuki. (Both Part 1 & 2)

Probably most notable for being responsible for the Lee vs. Gaara fight in Part 1.

I did not know who made those scenes, but I did notice when they would have a smoother feeling to them than others.
