“Is that me?!” Naruto asked, a flabbergasted expression written on his petite face. The stranger before him was no stranger. Deep blue eyes, three markings on each cheek, shaggy blonde hair. That was him! The fellow was much taller though, also possessing more muscular features and a strong jaw. His voice was not so high pitched, but was deep and cracked with age. The man was clothed in a long-sleeved white robe which was open at the torso and bore a swirl symbol on fabric around the right side of his chest. A red obi rounded his waist tightly, making the loose garment more form fitting. His eyes were bright, as if a lantern was lit in each eyeball, and his smile was warm, comforting, relaxing.
“Calm down dude. It's you, more accurately an older version of you. How old are you?” the man asked gently with a look of great curiosity on his relaxed face.
“Twelve.” the younger blonde replied.
“Then I'm ten years older than you.” he informed loudly with an excited smile. Clearly elements of his exuberant childhood nature still lingered. “This is interesting. I was trying to transport my clone through time, I didn't know the process would forcibly draw my younger self to my time.”
“Actually I'm a clone. The original made me to clean up my...our room and I sorta feel asleep.” the child informed while nervously scratching his chin.
“Oh, I remember that day!” the older Naruto exclaimed. “It was the day before we went on that mission with Tazuna...” he stopped abruptly and covered his mouth with one hand, it seemed like he had said something wrong. “Never mind,” he started with a smile, “let's just say you have a big day ahead of you tomorrow. Well, your tomorrow.”
“Since I'm not the real Naruto, I guess I'm not trapped here or anything. Do I just end the Shadow Clone technique and dispel into smoke?” the child asked, casually placing both hands behind his head.
A silence followed as the older Naruto stared off into the ceiling, seeming to be deep in thought. “You could do that,” he began, “or you could have some fun in the future.” a sly smile played on his lips. “I'll show you around. First, we start with this place.” His hand gestured to every corner of the spacious room.
A wooden table and chair were shoved into one of the four corners of the room, pressed up against the wall which also bore the russet-coloured door that served as both entrance and exit. On the desk was a large assortment of rolled up scrolls stacked on each other. The floor was bare, its wooden surface completely exposed for all to see but the walls were painted a fiery red. Each wall, however, had a large, white spiral etched into it. The ceiling was pure white and a small light bulb hung freely from its centre by an electrical wire. Two windows were present, one carved into the wall directly opposite the table and the other on one of the walls adjacent to the first window. The radiance of the sun poured in through both windows, it was the only source of illumination as the light bulb was off.
“This is where Dad stored his weapons when he was still alive. After we were born, this was the first place he brought us to keep us safe from the Kyubi and the man who was controlling it. It was destroyed that night but since the land belonged to me, his son, by inheritance, I built this place. Now, I use it to work on various new techniques, a process made infinitely faster by the use of shadow clones.” explained the twenty two year old Naruto.
“I don't understand. Dad? Mum?” said the younger Naruto with the most confused expression on his petite face.
“Oh, sorry!” the older version of the boy apologised in a nervous tone. “You don't know who our parents are. Our Dad was the Fourth Hokage, Namikaze Minato. The Kyubi was inside our Mum, Uzumaki Kushina until we were born, then a man attacked her, released the Kyubi from her body and attacked Konoha with it. Then Dad sealed it into me...well, us before he and Mum died that fateful night.” Sadness expressed itself clearly on the face of the older Naruto as he gave his explanation. The younger Naruto's face lost all expression as the heavy words of his older self sunk deep into him. “Anyways,” the older forced a smile onto his features, “its all in the past now. Besides, we're Hokage now and we've never been happier so it's ok!”
“We're the son of the Fourth?! And we're Hokage?!” asked the younger in an excited, high pitched voice, eyes glazed with excitement.
The older simply placed one hand on his hip and smiled warmly. “Yep.”
“WE DID IT!” screamed the blonde child as he raised both hands above his head, losing himself in joy.
The older chuckled. “That's not all. You have much to see. But first. I have to explain something. The reason you're here is because Dad had a technique called the Flying Thunder God technique which allowed him to vanish and reappear wherever he wanted. This made him the fastest shinobi to ever live.”
“That's so cool!” the younger screamed, a wide grin beaming across his face.
“Of course. Nothing less from the Fourth, right? Anyways, I've been trying to modify the technique to not just transport instantly through space, but through time as well.”
“I...uh...I don't get it.” the younger informed nervously. He never could grasp anything remotely complex. A trait that earned him many insults from instructors throughout his academy days.
Older Naruto sighed, it was frustrating but he understood, having literally being in the boy's position, once before. “What I mean is that I want to be able to go to yesterday and change whatever I want, go to tomorrow and see what happens there.” he dumbed down his explanation.
“Oh.” the young lad lit up with a smile, finally grasping the words of his older self.
“I tried to do it with a clone but the clone simply vanished without a trace, then I sensed your chakra in the forest which was exactly the same as my own. I think my clone switched places with you...somehow. Not what I expected. Certainly, there are a few kinks to work out.”
“So your clone is back in my time. You're super strong, right? Maybe your clone should get revenge on Kakashi-sensei for sticking his hand in my butt! Or prank the hell out of that bastard Sasuke!” A wicked grin was etched on the younger blonde's face as he voiced his mischievous ideas.
Older Naruto laughed.
“We're more mature than that now, kiddo. My clone would probably use the reverse form of my modified version of Dad's technique to transport himself back here to prevent from altering time.”
“Oh, what's so bad if he alters time? Now that I think about it, you could go back and stop Dad and Mum from ever dying. What's wrong with that?” The younger Naruto asked quizzically.
“Well, lots of things. I'd love to explain but its much too complex.” replied the 22-year-old Naruto. He saw the sombre look that appeared on the younger's face.
“Ok.” the blonde child said softly, eyes narrowed in sadness and disappointment.
“C'mon, you have much to see.” With that, the older blonde excitedly grabbed the younger and exited the room in a bright flash of light.
They arrived, in an instant, on the red, dome-like rooftop of a particularly large building in the bustling Village of Konoha. The Hokage Office Building on which they were stood surpassed all other surrounding structures in terms of size, this fact seemed to have been unaltered by ten years of time.
“Stop doing th...” hollered the younger Naruto as they arrived at their destination. However, he was left unable to finish his loud complaint when he beheld the appearance of his older self. The older Naruto was enveloped in a flame-like chakra shroud that was accentuated with several markings including six tomoe across his upper chest, a spiral below each shoulder and some others. The twelve year old Naruto was left awe struck as he continued to gaze in wonder.
“Sorry. I normally make use of my Kyubi Mode for most movement. It's really fast.” explained the older of the two. Every element of this new visage suddenly began to flicker away and the white robe which he donned earlier quickly returned
The blonde child was still frozen in shock at the previous countenance of his older self. “W-What was that?” the twelve year old asked softly, his eyes unflinching as they continued to gaze at the taller blonde.
“That was Kyubi Mode. Like I said, you have much to see. Turn around.”
The twelve year old was snapped out of his daze by the instruction that softly escaped the lips of his older self. The order was quickly obeyed as the lad slowly twisted his head around and was immediately lost for words. “That..that's...that face” he managed to mutter.
“Yup.” responded the older Naruto in a husky voice and a warm smile, hands folded as he kept both eyes fixed on the blonde lad who was frozen in shock.
“My face in the Hokage Mountain!” screamed the younger lad in unrestrained excitement. He began leaping up and down, unable to contain the joy that flooded inside him in that moment. He kept both eyes fixed on the large stone carving that seemed to stare back at him. The sculpture's resemblance to him, well the older version of him, was unmistakeable. As he stared at it, the massive stone carving that represented the fulfillment of his lifelong dream, a strong feeling of fulfillment welled up inside him and escaped as a tear drop from the corner of his right eye. “I really did it!” he exclaimed as more of the salty liquid began to pour out of both his eyes
“Yeah, we did. Now come, let me introduce you to everybody. We'll start with Kurama.”
