Japanese use the Chinese characters, Hanzi I believe in Chinese, but also two other alphabets that were adapted from Kanji, Hiragana and Katakana. Kanji have different readings roughly based on Chinease readings, and the meanings can differ.

Japanese also uses Hiragana and Katakana for particles, so a sentence usually isn't made up of just kanji. That's how you tell the difference.
