Nagato and Pain

I was reading a thread and some people were making statements which implied that pain and Nagato were different people.
I would like to know if this is true and why.

Nagato controlled all paths of pain.

paths of pain were just corpses, reanimated and pierced with chakra receiving rods.

the paths of pain had no free will whatsoever.

so they were pretty much nagato's other bodies, therefor they are the same person.
