Itachi massacred his own clan. HE was a failure. I wouldn't call him the most influential ninja of the series

If he didn't kill his clan then war would have been inevitable. He valued the village above all, a true shinobi, he had to endure pain to ensure peace for those fodders in Konoha.

War, what war? A war between Konoha and the Uchiha clan? Well that's not a war. That would be only a pointless battle. And if I were in Itachi's place, I would have tried to protect my OWN clan and not massacre them....

well i am going by 3 ninjas who had very big influence on the ninja world:

1-so6p, he created all ninjutsu which is used currently. his teachings led to a great era. if it werent for him, everyone would under the destruction of juubi.

2-hashirama, he stopped warring states period, he created a village system which is now used by every village, he gave multiple bijuus to each village as a trust, and he created an ideal called ''will of fire'', which has been used by 100 konoha ninjas.

3-tobirama, he created chunin exams, he created military force such as anbu, jonin, chunin, and genin, he created schools to be used for ninjutsu teachings.

they have a huge influence on the ninja world.

Itachi Uchiha, Sacrificed everything for the sake of the village and his little brother. Heavy burden to bare considering his only other choice was for everyone in his clan to die and have a war break out. He also had a pretty big impact on Naruto.
