Robert Durst has been in the media a lot lately and interviews of him were recently featured on a mini series. He openly admitted that he dismembered a body..... then claimed the slaying was purely self defense [like WTF?]. He got away with it. The problem with the ruling was the fact the prosecution went for murder 1 and lost. While it was deserved to go for murder 1, the defense was smart and the jury were idiots. They likely should have gone for murder 2 or manslaughter. He's accused of at least 2 other murders and was just now re-arrested.
Casey Anthony allegedly murdered her 3 year old daughter. The case had quite a lot of forensic evidence, if I recall, and the verdict of not guilty was largely due to gross oversight on the jury's part. They stated they did not find the evidence telling enough to prove she was guilty. The vast majority of people felt the opposite. She was in the media very extensively and had many death threats soon after the case was decided. She was largely seen as an uncaring mother that regretted having a child at the expense of her party life.
So who is more notorious? I've got to say Casey Anthony simply because she's accused of murdering her own child and taking into account the extensive media coverage that the case experienced. Durst could compete, however, considering he openly admitted dismembering a body after killing the man in self defense. Clearly anyone who would admit to dismembering a body is only admitting to that because they did something even worse, murdered one or more people.
I recall there was another woman who's case was covered extensively in the media between these 2 cases that was accused of murdering her husband but claimed self defense. I wasn't as keenly aware of that case and its specifics, so I did not include it.
