Couple months ago i made a similar theory that madaras eyes were sealed and can no longer use EMS, and itachis gift was involved.

Since the moon eye thing tobi mentioned though im simply adding to it.
I dont know the ins and outs, as one person says here, i havent filled every gap, but ive answered a plot with generally high possibility.
Whether im correct only time will tell, i may possibly be wrong of course.

Back to reading the manga again, it got interesting. Anyways I think this goes way back to the time of the 1st hokage. Why was he collecting the bijuus. I believe him and maadara were planning to do something maybe unleash some sort of power to conquer the world. But the 1st bailed out , and thats why they fought. I dont believe they fought over being hokage. Furthermore the 1st spread out the bijuus among the other countries so noone would be able to do what him and maadra were planning to do.
Also Itachi mentioned some power beyond the 9 tails fox when he fought sasuke. Maybe that has to do with what maadara is planning.

Just one problem with the end, when did itachi mention something greater than the fox??
Other than that i think its a very credible idea.
It does seem weird for Madara to fight over something as silly as Hokage, after all, he wasnt attached to any real village etc, only his clan, and his clan went down 2 scenarios
1.we believe tobi and they went against him, in which case why did he want to be associated with them and not destroy them from the very beginning?
2.We dont believe tobi and everything went fine and madara is just a psychopath out for himself
Thing is if hes out for himself, why become hokage??

and he's said much more interesting later on. Maadara taking his brother's eyes gave him permanent mangekeyo sharingan , PMS or EMS. And gave birth to a new eye technique. Here

I don't think that eye technique is the EMS because itachi mentioned that beforehand. I dont know what it is but i think its connected to maadara's plan.
