Yeah, so I saw this thread on another forum and thought that it might be interesting if we discussed about it here.
So like the title suggests, it's about Dragon's past. The theory is that Dragon was an Admiral before he became a revolutionary. This is not so unlikely since Garp probably pushed Dragon to becoming a strong marine, just like he did with Luffy, Ace and Sabo. Some people speculate that he either saw/learned a WG secret/past or that one his loved ones like his wife (Luffy's mother) got killed (being his wife is very unlikely, since Luffy wasn't born yet when he was at Roger's execution). This is what made him leave and start the Revolutionaries. Being a former Admiral would speak about his power and justify the reactions people have when hearing about him. Picture Kuzan creating a revolutionary army and growing stronger in both personal and military power over a long period of time. This would certainly justify the "World's most dangerous criminal" title as well.

About the timeline: He was seen at Roger's execution, so he might've just have left the Marines then. Luffy is 19 post-timeskip so his father can be everywhere between 40-60, let's say 50-55. This would make it that he was around 30 years old when he quit being an Admiral, Roger's execution being 24 years ago post-timeskip. Though he might've not been an Admiral for a very long time.

Someone in the forum mentioned something similar to that it would be cool if Oda shows a flashback of Dragon and under his picture it would says "Marine HQ Admiral Monkey D. Dragon". I also think that it would be pretty awesome. It could be that he was just undercover during the execution of Roger to not draw attention to himself. Then we might see him take of the robe on his way back to HQ and there is an Admiral uniform under. Then it could be that he had already learned about to WG secret/past, but didn't leave immediately. Instead he left after they killed Luffy's mother.

I don't know if I believe it yet (or think that it's possible), but I thought that it was an interesting perspective regarding Dragon's history so I added a little to it.
I actually think this is plausible being a Monkey D Dragon fan myself.
What do you think?

Interesting. But I think someone would've commented about Dragon being an Admiral. For example: "Straw hat Luffy is the son of the 'Most wanted man in the Wolrd'; the ex-Admiral?!!"

There is one huge flaw in all of this. It was a well-guarded secret that Dragon was the son of Garp. Garp was already world famous because he was able to match the Pirate King + any person that has got the admiral rank becomes famous. If Dragon really would have been an admiral, he should have been the most famous one of them all considering he is the son of Garp and an admiral. There really would have been no need to keep that a secret, still only a handful of people was aware of this till the War at the Summit.

Not only was barely anyone aware of Dragon's relation to Garp, not a single person has ever made a single tiny reference of him being a marine, let alone an admiral, even the persons who knew his lineage.

In the end this is mainly wishful thinking. There is nothing that supports this. That person just says that, seeing his age, there's 'room' for him having been an admiral at some point, but there is nothing that indicates that that would have indeed been the case. That Garp pushed Luffy, Ace and Sabo to become marines? Well we all know how that ended up, so why wouldn't it have been the same for Dragon? So that can even works against this statement.

it was said that he denied that position many times
That's Garp.

Furthermore, the marines said that they never heard Dragon's full name before.

Dragon, was a mysterious person to the marines and wG. They had no idea where he came from. This pretty much closes your theory. But I guess it was worth trying, hm?

But yeah, he was never an admiral.

Nope he was never an admiral remember that flashback back they had where that guy said that Dragon is not a threat now but will be in the future/ I think that rules him out of being an admiral. I cant remember the chapter but just check it out on his page on Op wiki
