Latest chapter basically confirmed that Mokuton has exactly jack all to do with Hashirama's "suppression" abilities.
Near as I can tell while Mokuton can "absorb" chakra into itself much like the Shinju itself, Mokuton draws out chakra it doesn't suppress it like we saw Hashirama lay his "wooden" hands on the Kyuubi during his battle with Madara. Ie The Kyuubi wasn't "Absorbed" by his Mokuton but still Kurama was suppressed in some way.
Hashirama's suppression abilities come from his Sage mode. But its not some special ability that only he has, Naruto himself could do this if he knew how, in fact the ability is very similar to synching with Kurama for BSM.
Hashirama can when coming into contact either through his Mokuton or with his hand directly can synch his own Natural energy mix with the victim there by allowing him to absorb a massive amount of natural energy without destroying himself.
Yamato has only demonstrated the absorbing abilities of Mokuton not the suppression abilities of Hashirama.
Normally if Hashirama tried to do this he would suffer the petrification like the stone toads from taking in too much nature energy, but by using the victims reserves as a base he can create an equally powerful mass of chakra which he can then over balance with his own chakra. Hence why Hashirama could suppress the chakra of beings that should be massively more powerful than any Ninja, example Kurama.
Honestly the ability would only work on people with stupidly massive chakra reserves.....People like juubito currently is.
Conclusion:
Hashirama's ability to suppress chakra comes only from Sage mode.
I propose that Madara is planning on using this ability to suppress Obito's chakra and somehow take control of the jutsu away from him, he won't gain the Juubi but he will gain control of the Genjutsu that is currently forming. Madara never cared about obtaining "unlimited power" he did however care about obtaining unlimited control. Ie whats the point of having the juubi if you control the Genjutsu that will control the world?
