Well Mokuton or Wood release is a kekkei genkai created from combining the chakra types earth and water. This is done by channeling water in one hand and earth chakra in the other combining them both with a handseal creating wood. A Mokuton user not only creates wood but can create a fully grown tree to a little seed. The user can also create wood from their own body due to their chakra being converted into a source of life.
Mokuton originated from the first hokage Hashirama Senju, which he used to create the hidden leaf village with and to take down the nine tails. Several ninja's such as Yamato,Zetsu,Obito,Madara and Danzo implanted the cells of Hashirama Senju into their body, allowing them to use Mokuton.
Wood release is weak to lightning due to it running through it, shredding it completely. Such as a bolt of lightning on a tree. It is also neutral to fire.
Wood release is strong against Bijuu chakra as we seen in the manga, as well earth due to it breaking earth apart from within. Wood release is strong against water, due to it being highly resistant against it.

In the manga we have seen that wood release is strong against tailed beast chakra.

After hearing my sensei's commands, I begin to build up my doton chakra. As the chakra pressure builds gradually, I focus the doton chakra to my hand. Feeling the chakra within my palms, I begin to build up my suiton chakra and focus it to my hands as well. I then bring my hands together while maintaining focus and perform the snake hand seal. Creating wood chakra.

Feeling the newly formed wood chakra swelling throughout my body now, I focus this new chakra into the ground. As the chakra is felt beneath me now, I focus more chakra causing a small pillar of wood to emerge from the ground.

Jiraya kneels down inspecting the particles and density of the wooden pillar. He blows a little towards the pillar as dust and earth particles begin to fall of it.
Too much earth. Try again and balance out your chakra nicely.
After failing the first time Yamato was determine not to fail twice. yamato begins to slowly build up his doton chakra. As the doton chakra reaches it's peak, Yamato channels it to his palm causing the doton chakra to materialize into raw earth chakra. With the newly formed doton chakra in his left hand Yamato begins to build up his suiton chakra repeating the same pattern and materializing it in his right hand. With both respective chakras in his hands Yamato slowly evens out his chakra flow to both hands before merging them into one. With the newly formed wood chakra in his hands, Yamato drops in levels and slams his palms to the ground while distilling his Mokuton chakra into the ground creating a single wooden pillar within the ground. By focusing more chakra the pillar emerge from the ground.

After successfully completing my previous jutsu I begin focusing more mokuton chakra within me. Feeling the chakra pressure swell throughout my body I quickly channel it to my arm and cause a staff of wood to emerge from my arm. With the wooden staff in my hand now I focus more mokuton chakra into the staff and shape multiple kunai within the staff. I then swing downwards with the staff in my hand causing the kunai to break off and fly off towards a near bye tree. As the kunai sore through the air, I place my hands to the ground and distill my mokuton chakra into the ground causing a wooden dummy to emerge form the ground. The dummy now formed dashes at the tree and removes the kunai.
Question: Can wood be used on anything other then solid surfaces. (Water, Mud, Sand)

And yes, wood can be created from water, mud, sand if they aren't infused with the opponent chakra. For example, you can turn a whole water source into wooden pillars, brances, trees. You can create wood from sand and mud if they are naturally there, not created or manipulated by your enemy.

Description: By focusing chakra and performing the Bird → Dog → Snake hand seals, the user makes wood pillars sprout from the ground and cover his whole body, while using chakra to cover it with precision to produce the desired effect. By covering the wood with his chakra the user is able to transform it into another shape or form with increased detail, by using his wood chakra. This is used to create an effect similar to the transformation technique but to a higher degree of detail and realism.
Perform three hand seals and force pillars to erupt from the ground and cover your body. By using shape manipulation, the pillars encase your body allowing you to transform yourself into any shape/form/person you desire. Like the Henge No Jutsu, but with more detail.

Attack your target with multiple kicks and punches before extending a wooden pillar from your left palm which pushes you from the ground, pushing you to the opponent, where you kick him in the chin with a kick.

I gather wood chakra within me then I perform 3 hand seals and slam my hand to the ground causing pillars of wood to emerge from the ground and encase my bodies. As the wood surrounds me I shape the wood and myself into an exact replica of my sensei. (Just a wooden version)

I release the wood chakra from my body then begin kneading it within me again. As the wood chakra reaches it's peak I expel said chakra into the ground and beneath my sensei. I then thrust my hand upwards causing a small wooden pillar to emerge form the ground and lift you into the air.

I gather my mokuton chakra within me again then I perform the Snake → Rat → Ox → Ram → Snake hand seals and distill my chakra into the ground causing a wooden home to emerge form the ground and surround me.
Jutsu 3
After creating the home I stomp my foot causing it to dismantle itself I then gather more mokuton chakra within me and perform the Ram → Ox → Boar → Snake hand seals causing wood to emerge from the ground and encase you in a prison. 3meters in width and height. I clap my hands releasing the cage.

(The user specifies) This hole acts as a slide causing liquids or thin solids (Mud, Sand, Dirt, Soil) to suck deep into the ground and back to the user for future uses.
Note: By snapping his finger again the user can close the hole or stop the suction of liquids under ground

Note: Is resistant to C rank variants of water and earth combos

Description: The user stomps his foot causing a wall of wood to emerge before the user. The user then performs a string of 3 hand seals causing the center of the wall to open. By clapping his hands, the wall will then shape into many sharp "teeth" like edges which rotate at high speeds "shredding" oncoming attacks.
Note: Can shred ninja tools and explosives and remain.
Note: Can jutsu B rank and below elemental jutsu which aren't natural weaknesses of wood or earth. So no lightning.
Note: Shredder continues to rotate as long as the user focuses chakra
Note: If the user isn't focusing chakra it is just a normal wall of wood
Note: Can't use any earth or wood jutsu the following turn
Note: Shredder continue to shred until it is destroyed or the user stops focusing chakra
