if you are using windows and do not need recovery of the lost files try to do the following (after you start typing normal).

right click "my computer" > "manage" > in the left panel there is a "storage" node, under this is "disk management"
if your disk is not damaged and the space is still available it should be shown as "black" unpartitioned space in the bottom right panel.

if there is no unpartitioned space there is something wrong with your system(most likely the hdd or the hdd was just that size to start with)

if there is unpartitioned space right click the unpartitioned space and choose create new partition.

if you don`t know what to do in the following screens try reading :

its impossible to have a problem in the HDD after formating it.
you have to do one of the following:

1- maybe you have problem in the windows which you are installing.
(try installing with another windows if you have)

2- you HDD is fcked up (so buy another one)

the first option is effective try it...
I agree, and if the first one doesn't work, try 2 it may just be due to bad sectors on the HD

Hmm.. something like this happened with my last computer, I had 160 GB HDD, and I sent the computer to be repaired, when I got it back, only 80GB..
You prolly installed the Windows over the old one, thus, you only got 30GB, I don't think it can be fixed :|
Where the old files still in it? If not - you got scamed big time

Hello. A format does not format all the partions. Only the current partition. In order to remove the partions you need to run fdisk. I'm not a Windows user but I know a little bit about DOS:
Save/backup all of your data. Restart your computer in MS-DOS mode. Type fdisk at the shell prompt for a list of commands. You will need to list the partions, then manually delete them. After you have removed all of the partions you can format the drive (type format at the shell prompt for a list of commands) and reinstall the operating system. This will work. I'm sure you installed a second operating system on an extended partition. If you need more help feel free to ask.

I think i know what the problem is...u see when u format a PC and reinstall windows u create Partitions for the disc..in simple words u divide the hard disk into 2 or more pieces..when u make a partition u must write the exact space ur hard drive has if u want only 1 partition..sorry to say this but u may have to format again..

I had this problem too , just remake teh partitions since someone must've made an error calculating the partitions size . If that doesnt work or reinstaling another windows doesnt work , take out your HDD , go to the window , aim at 45 degrees and THROW .. because its f***ed ..
