It wouldn't be so weird if he had an affinity for wind AND lightning. Don't forget the element wheel:
Water beats Fire beats Wind beats Lightning beats Earth beats Water.
Mokuton (wood) techniques are used by combining water and earth, of which one is weak to the other, so it's entirely possible that Minato had an affinity for both, and possibly mastered a new element. I don't think him mastering a new element is likely, as we surely would have heard about it by now (again, Mokuton for the 1st)..
