Minato was a great character, but a terrible sensei

I've written this post in some other thread, but I decided it's a topic that might deserve its own thread. So, I'll just copy my post:

Seriously, I like Minato, but I think he was an awful sensei. He didn't seem to care much about Obito's "death" apart from saying "sorry", he wasn't there to help Kakashi and Rin on their mission (and I think it was known from the beginning it would be a hell of a mission if a whole platoon of mist ANBU attacked Kakashi and Rin) and then, when Obito returned to Konoha, he was more eager to think it was Madara than him.
What's more, he never really mentioned or thought of any of his students after Kakashi Gaiden ended. It is understandable that he focused on Naruto, but seriously, he doesn't seem to care for anyone else at all. Now again, when he was revived, he only thought of Naruto and didn't even seem to care if Kakashi was still alive or not.

That's why I think when he arrives on the battlefield, he won't ask about Kakashi. And because he won't ask about him, he will not find out that Obito is alive and that his two students are slapping each other in the other dimension right now. Because why should anyone tell him at this moment? They are in a desperate situation themselves, there's a Juubi and Madara going rampage at the moment.

Conflict between Kakashi and Obito will be resolved even without Minato knowing it existed.

Discuss.

Minato isn't a very fleshed out character, so it's kind of hard to say either way.

It's rumored that he may get his own spin-off, and in that case, I'm sure much depth will be added.

Possibly with him dealing over the guilt involving Obito (privately.)

After all, one of the ninja rules is to not cry or show weakness, particularly in front of other ninja, or especially students.

minato sucks in any aspect

Nah. He was obviously kind-hearted and powerful, which is enough not to suck. I just get the feeling that he totally didn't care about his students.

It isn't. He was a great character overall, but had some aspects I don't like.

That's not the subject of this thread.

Yes, but as Minato himself stated, rules are not everything and sometimes one just needs to adjust to situation.

In his mind kakashi died. Pain brought everyone back to life after His talk with his son. After that his chakra faded so he most likely was kept out of the loop.

His team was chunnin and jonin not gennin. His wasn't completely responsible for them.

They were in a war period where Konoha was terribly lacking in military force. That's why they even let kids like Obito or Kakashi participate in mission. Minato couldn't be everywhere at anytime even if he is the yellow flash. He had to occupy the enemy from the front and he is responsible of Konoha's victory during the 3rd ninja war. If he didn't do that, there would have been much more enemys trying to attack the group in a whole, which would make thing even more dramatic. They would have lose the war, and more persons(and possibly even his students included) if he didn't do what he did. Furthermore, it's said that Uchihas in general are mentally retarded(or at least become like this) when they experience the loss of a beloved one. It's not his fault that Obito turned bad. He is in a cursed clan, and it's not as if Minato knew that

Great. But you missed the part where Minato states that Kakashi will become the new Captain of the Team of Rin, Kakashi, and Obito, as soon as he became a Jounin. They became an independent team in the Gaiden, with Kakashi as their captain. Which means that Minato can not be held responsible for what happened to Obito; the fact that he tried to help them, is enough proof that he was a good Sensei, because he tried to do it even when he had no official affiliation with the team...

True, but compare this.

-Kakashi and Rin were sent on a mission in which they fought a platoon of ANBU and jonin. At this time Minato just went on some other mission, supposedly.

-On the other hand, when Shikamaru's team was sent to retrieve Sasuke and Kakashi learned about it, he ignored orders he got from Tsunade and rushed to help them. It was a much less dangerous mission, yet he treated it very seriously.

Thanks for the reply, Bogard. :p I appreciate your opinion.
I know they've been lacking in military force, but as I said, this does not justify the fact Minato seems not to be interested in his students (or one remaning student, to be more exact) at all, even after being revived. Also, the Kakashi & Rin mission I've already mentioned and the fact that Minato, of all people, suspected Tobi to be Madara and not Obito.
I know he didn't have any bad intentions or anything, it's just that Minato doesn't seem to care about his students ever since the end of Kakashi Gaiden.

The fact Kakashi became a captain is a good argument, but it doesn't speak to me. Shikamaru in Sasuke retrieval arc was also appointed the leader, but Kakashi still rushed to help the team (even though most of it was not even his students) and ignored the orders to go on another mission.

Besides, after the incident with Obito, one could think Minato would be more careful and protective, yet Kakashi and Rin were sent alone on a mission in which they had to deal with 40 jonin & ANBU?

Hm, yeah, I see your point but in a battle situation you win some you lose some.

What minato said fit perfectly really, he wants to set an example of staying strong and showing no emotion and what not.

Since minato has been back we haven't seen much of him so that part kinda lacks in your favour but also, you sacrifice yourself on your child's birthday, why wouldn't naruto be the only person on his mind? Kakashi may be dead and he recently saw naruto and a war is going on rot now so of course naruto is the only person on his mind.

Minato will meet both obito and kakashi, is what I believe.

Minato always complained about them 2 never getting on.. hold up, so what if they decide to join forces and minato shows up and says
'Its good to finally see you both working together or something.. who knows.
If they don't cooperate minato will then say that they haven't changed, they still can't get along.

Its that part *** that made me think, what if, during their time period, senseis weren't allowed to get close to their students?
