FYI, I like both the genres. So going to compare both musically and then lyrically. Then perhaps focus on cultural implications.
Musically - METAL
1)
Suffocation an example of metal that is percussive.
2)
Slayer here is an example of metal that is phrasal.
3)
Burzum using a trance like style. Very easy to do, but hard to do well.
4)
Bolt Thrower an example of metal that is textural.
Musically - HIP HOP
1)
Produced by El-P in its entirety. Dark atmosphere and an ominous vibe given off by the bass (sampled).
2)
Produced by DJ Abilities. Use of xylophone to emulate what seems like water droplets. Wind instruments to produce melancholy.
3)
Produced by DJ Premier. Sampled off a song called Deliver the Word by War. Piano/xylophone produces sombre mood.
4)
Composed & produced by Nujabes. Best example of musicality in hip-hop, imo.
Now as you can see whilst metal is instrumentally driven, the composition aspect of hip-hop takes a back seat. A band composes their own music, writes their own lyrics and performs it. However a rapper at best writes the lyrics and performs (which is more to do with showcasing your persona). The real credit in hip-hop should go to the producer who may create music fresh (e.g. Nujabes) or sample from an artist and then arrange in a way that produces music that has cohesion and context (e.g. Kanye on MBDTF).
Lyrically - METAL

Lyrically - HIP HOP

As you can see, both genres touch upon bleak topics death, struggle, war etc. The only difference is that metal is nihilistic as opposed to hip-hop's hedonism, with metal more entrenched in fantasy and the occult. Hip-Hop on the other hand has delusions of grandeur (gangster rap, G-Funk) but can also be conscious (A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Public Enemy).
Metal is lyrically abstract whereas hip-hop for the most part is less so with exceptions of course. What may edge it for hip-hop, lyrically, is that it uses linguistic devices not common in metal such as assonance, alliteration, multisyllabic rhyming, half rhymes, metaphors etc. Although since hip-hop is more lyrically driven, it needs these devices for it to stand up against other genres.

War Pigs by Black Sabbath
Generals gathered in their masses,
just like witches at black masses.
Evil minds that plot destruction,
sorcerer of death's construction.
In the fields the bodies burning,
as the war machine keeps turning.
Death and hatred to mankind,
poisoning their brainwashed minds...Oh lord yeah!
Politicians hide themselves away
They only started the war
Why should they go out to fight?
They leave that role to the poor
Time will tell on their power minds
Making war just for fun
Treating people just like pawns in chess
Wait `till their judgement day comes, yeah!
Now in darkness, world stops turning,
ashes where the bodies burning.
No more war pigs have the power,
hand of god has struck the hour.
Day of judgement, god is calling,
on their knees the war pigs crawling.
Begging mercy for their sins,
Satan, laughing, spreads his wings...Oh lord, yeah!

My Journey to the Stars by Burzum
I Immaterialize
And Slowly Drift
Into the Unknown
With the Cold Winds with Soul
The Wintery Plains Lie Untouched
I Ride on My Elements
Towards the Stars Unseen
A Quest
For Knowledge
In the
Astral
Luminous
Stench Intensifies
As I
Near a Spectral Sphere
After a Hundred
Men's Lifetime
In Analyzing
I learn
To Consume
The Sphere
Of Immense Power
And To
Become Immortal
Darkness Hate and Winter
Rules the Earth when I Return
War
Between Races
A Goal Is Reached
Chaos, Hate
I Immaterialize
And Slowly Drift
Into the Unknown
With the Cold Winds with Soul
The Wintery Plains Lie Untouched
I Ride on My Elements
Towards the Stars Unseen
A Quest
For Knowledge

Dirt by Alice in Chains
[Verse 1]
I have never felt such frustration
Or lack of self control
I want you to kill me
And dig me under, I want to live no more
[Chorus]
One who doesn't care is one who shouldn't be
I've tried to hide myself from what is wrong for me
For me
[Verse 2]
I want to taste dirty, a stinging pistol
In my mouth, on my tongue
I want you to scrape me from the walls
And go crazy like you've made me
[Chorus]
[Verse 3]
You, you are so special
You have the talent to make me feel like dirt
And you, you use your talent to dig me under
And cover me with dirt
[Chorus]
[Verse 1]
I have never felt such frustration
Or lack of self control
I want you to kill me
And dig me under, I want to live no more
[Chorus]
One who doesn't care is one who shouldn't be
I've tried to hide myself from what is wrong for me
For me
[Verse 2]

Necropolis by Manilla Road
Through the jungle by the river Styx
I've journeyed long and far this day
Lurking shadows in the parapets
Will never make me turn away
Darkened city veiled in crimson mist
Entombed in time without decay
Never thought it would be like this
It feels like I'm living inside a dream
But my mind tells me I'm
Lost in Necropolis, lost in Necropolis
Lost in Necropolis, lost in Necropolis
Now I know what it's like to be
Inside the city of the dead
All I think of is breaking free
From all the spells chained to my head
Sword and axe are my destiny
I watch the stars turning blood red
There is light yes I've got to believe
For this feels like living inside a dream
I know now that I am
Lost in Necropolis, lost in Necropolis
Lost in Necropolis, lost in Necropolis
I have seen your cities burning
I have felt your daughters yearning
For the peace before the tides of war
I have witnessed funeral pyres
Burning bright with man's desire
I will fight the demon horde forever more
The world is full of mysteries
That men have never seen before
Magik lives in all dynasties
The light of love shines ever more
In the crypts of Atlantean Kings
I found what I was looking for
Magik Trident of Volusia's Sea
I know it's like living inside a dream
But don't you ever get
Lost in Necropolis, lost in Necropolis
Lost in Necropolis, lost in Necropolis
Through the jungle by the river Styx
I've journeyed long and far this day
Lurking shadows in the parapets
Will never make me turn away
Darkened city veiled in crimson mist
Entombed in time without decay
