What position could Sasuke hold down in the village that's of equal importance? Could that in itself be a reasoning to why Sasuke would prefer distance from the village? Elaborate.

I think it's for a variety of reasons:

1- the memory of the loss of his clan and Itachi's story is just too painful to live a normal life in the village
2- while the memories are painful, he has a sense of duty to protect the village and the shinobi world, lest Itachi's sacrifice goes to waste
3- in a way, he hasn't forgiven himself for the dark path he chose....the perpetual journey and the fact that he never accepted a replacement arm symbolizes his constant journey of atonement and the journey and missing arm is a constant reminder of what Naruto did for him
4- if we are to believe Karin in Sasuke Shinden and Orochimaru in the Sasuke Shinden anime, he'll be a constant target bc of the rinnegan, and subsequently the village will be under constant attack.....true no one can stand against him and Naruto, but why subject the village to the constant threat? It's best that he remains on the constant move.
5- There are still threats out there outside of the 5 great nations. Gotta quell threats to the peace before they become a problem.
