The time, effort, and technology that went into this are astounding. This is one of mankind's greatest accomplishments, next to putting a man on the moon.

That being said, one of the primary purposes of Mars exploration is to seek out possible traces of extraterrestrial life. Because of the conditions on Mars, it is not the greatest candidate for finding currently living organisms. A much better place to explore (in our solar system) would be Saturn's moon, Enceladus

^Lol guys. Really though, I'd prefer to look on it as a human scientific achievement. For the sake of scientific advancement, we need to go beyond nationalist squabbles.

If I had to speculate, we'll find information on what Mars' environment used to be like, and we'll probably find out more evidence on how it could've supported life. If we find life (most likely microbial) or actual evidence of life, it'll be huge and they'll shout that shit from the highest mountain tops.

I really dislike arguments like this. We can have multiple priorities in scientific research. Can we not pursue all venues of knowledge? Not all scientists have the skills or knowledge to be working on disease research. I would gladly get cancer if we could find life on another planet.
