No not really. They make money by the page; some time ago it was like 100$ page now for anyone who isn't popular; eg a newbie it's like 10$ page. That's a crappy amount of money; as basically if you can't get some popularity going in a short amount of time you'll have to either sponge off your parents/friends, take out a loan; or well give up; as running a part time job as well as being a Mangaka would be like impossible. Also they only get 10% of the money made from their volume sales. Let's say a volume costs 5$ if 1,000 gets printed and sold that's only 500$. If you're luck enough to sell say 10,000 - 30,000 in a year; then you're making some money. But still 30,000 isn't all that much; not to mention that money will probably be the least of their problems if they're not popular. Rather they'll constantly be in danger of getting axed. Only a handful of Mangaka's milk major money; and that's pretty much the same in an industry. So overall Mangaka's don't make all that much.
