One thing people seem to forget was that before Izuna's death and gaining the EMS, Madara and Izuna obtained the Mangekyou sharingan, and in order to obtain it, one must see someone close to them die.
Now in the manga it was never truly revealed how they obtained the MS, but in the anime they mentioned that they both killed their best-friends. So far as we know, Obito's retelling of Madara's past is very close to the truth of what Hashirama has told, making Obito a reliable source in that matter.
Here Obito says that "Madara" killed/exhausted his own friend(s) in his quest for power(depending on the translation), and what good man would do such a thing? It here that is hinted of how he managed to gain the MS.
Another reason is the fact that Hashirama didn't know Madara as well as he thought. He wasn't aware of the Uchiha curse and how they awaken their eyes until they created a truce and formed Konoha. He had no idea that Madara was consumed by hater and lust for power until Tobirama mentioned the curse to him.
It wasn't until here that Madara reveals his true nature to Hashirama....I don't believe Madara ever wanted peace.
he said in the scan above that he views the world as entertainment, which would explain why he never wanted to cooperate with Hashirama because he had fun doing constant battle, and at the end of the chapter, he even says he looks forward to fighting with him.
Madara saved Hashirama from suicide because he stated that Hashirama is the only one that could compete with him, and that he was looking forward to fighting him.
All throughout the 5 kage battle, he insulted them for being and constantly praised hashirama for being strong weak
All he wants is a good battle....Madara is a warmonger
Here is another scan that supports this; when Madara and Obito are controlling the juubi, Obito realizes that Madara deliberately went easy on Naruto so that he had an excuse to toy around with the juubi's power.....meaning that he truly has fun fighting.
and here we see him wanting to test the juubi's power
It has been shown so far that Madara treats battle as a game
Madara is has shown to be capable of manipulation, and because Hashirama was so trustworthy, he couldn't see Madara's intent.
to briefly summarize, I believe that Madara wasn't as sympathetic and caring as Hashirama made him out to be....this was Hashirama's interpretation, and because he considered Madara as a friend, he tried to retell it with portraying Madara in a better light. Madara is shown to love battle and know how to manipulate others....I believe that's what he did with Hashirama, that's why he never wanted a truce, he never showed his true intentions or at least Hashirama was ignorant to them which is why Tobirama was so hostile
