he saved his own ass.. kaguya didn't have any influence back then kaguya started to influence him the moment he connected himself to gedou mazou (containing kaguya) BZ was created while connected to gedou mazou and probably he thought of IT while connected to gedou mazou.

He was aiming for Mugen Tsukuyomi long before the battle against Hashirama and gaining rinnegan, not after.
