It's like Madara never had a life till he fought the first.

But noooo, all he cares about is the fight with the 1st.

Hashirama was his rival, and when you're that strong and get defeated, you tend to learn respect for him/her, and can't help but comparing everyone's power to him.

Its the same reason Vegeta always talks about Goku. Its because Goku was his greatest rival and even though he couldn't stand the fact that Goku was stronger then him he still admired Goku because of his strength and will.
