You are definitely not seeing the psychological state of MADARA but this latest chapter where he talks with obito, finally started to reveal his state of mind. I'll wait for manga to reveal more to his psychological mind state.
OT- Sage's ideals and ways didn't failed as it was never followed. Thus Madara says, "The Sage Failed". Madara is,however, right when he said,"Humans will never achieve peace in reality",similarly correct were Obito,"There is no such thing as true peace. There is no hope for this world. To hope is equivalent to giving up and is the biggest deception of all" and Nagato,"Humans are but simple creatures who will never achieve true peace and will never understand each other". So what to do?just give up and run away from hard course? of-course not,you believe that you can do it,and never give up. Goals just doesn't justify means at all.
