it's most certainly a thing, you should watch/read what whitebeard said about it.
Hmmm Whitebeard,if I remember good, said that OP exist and if it's found, it will surprise the world and turn it upside down, something like that...
But on his flashbacks he has been remembering Roger and the fact that government called him Gold Rogers to conceal the D. in his name and Rogers was talking to Whitebeard about the will of D.
So I always thought that Op has something to do with that and the void century and it's not a material thing.Of course the hat may have a connection to it, since it belong to Shanks and Rogers but I don't really think that the hat holds such power on it's own.It more like a representation of the things you hold dear and try to protect.

i think so aswell. it could be one of the ancient weapons or the truth behind the will of D, or the place of D itself

Ok honestly? I don't even watch One Piece- but what if the One Piece was in fact Luffy's hat this entire time?

If there's some crucial plot point or something that proves me wrong then let me know but that would just be the coolest ending.
Don't make theories without reading the manga...

So the hat is the one piece even though it has a big rip in it? How is it the greatest treasure?..
Could easily just be the visual metaphor for the whole 'Travel the world and friendships you made' idea.

Or it could just be the legacy handed down, it doesn't have to be as one-dimensional as 'some magic treasure' seriously, it's very likely.

This is my theory:

I think One Piece is a misconception by the World Government just like Roger's name was. The WG pronounced Roger's name as Gold Roger while it actually was Gol D. Roger.

So when Roger shouted from the execution platform that his treasure is One Piece, I think he meant to say One Peace. Roger's treasure on Raftel will be something to unite all the seas, maybe (a piece/clue) to a/the ancient weapons and to break down the Red Line. That way everybody can travel as they wish in total freedom.

The interesting part is that if someone like Luffy, goodhearted and kind acquires this treasure the world could change for the better, end of series marines with the good guys at the top could take advantage of the open seas to hunt pirates and fight evil.

If someone like Blackbeard acquires the treasure and becomes Pirate King it would be a new start for the age of pirates, everything become accessible and with the help of the ancient weapons he could destroy the navy and rule the world.

So I think One Piece is a treasure, only reachable by people with the Will of D, and gives the finder total freedom and can create one peace however they wish.
