When strictly looking at what they are, and not the reactions they caused in life. Game of Thrones is infinitely more complex, taking a realistic outlook on life back in the Medieval period. There's no absolute good or evil, it's everything just trying to get what they want and go along. It adds a few fantasy elements in it, but it's done with a certain taste. It's not obnoxious, more subtle and eases its way in versus. . A giant Balrog.

As George said, you can't really compare his work with Tolkiens. What they have in common is that both books can be placed in the fantasy genre, any and all similarities stop there.
