Ashura won the battle for leadership, which is what BZ used to manipulate Indra into fighting Ashura. They both killed each other through the war.

We should wait for the VIZ scans to see if Hogoromo really gave Ashura a power up.

As of now though, Naruto does need help to fight Sasuke, as already confirmed many times.
