How about when Minato teleports away the moment Gai enters 8th gate. If not so then Minato could raise a barrier while Gai is transforming and the moment Gai enters 8th Gate and attacks, he's stopped by the barrier for an instant, which is all Minato needs to teleport away.
So why didn't he teleport when Ay charged his lightning then? it's obvious minato's character doesn't leave until his opponent makes their offense (notice i said offense not movement). Ay's punch was literally a inch from his face before he managed to S/T out of that and it wasn't even light-weight enhanced Ay, so it's reasonable to believe that while he can escape harm in a instant you still have to factor in his reaction timing, character and intel. if he was in sagemode first or had precog then maybe. if by your logic he could've done all this he would've preformed much better in the war arc but he didn't.

Your're mixing two different kind of opponents here. Ay, Minato could easily take on directly and play with him lol. 8 Gate Gai on the other hand if he faces directly, then he'd be dead in seconds. So two different tactics for two different opponents. And the war arc was a different scenario, you're trying to mix a lot of things into one fight. War arc he needed to protect people which he did at least twice successfully. Taking on Gai is a completely different thing than the war arc.

"don't compare the two" they both are fast, fight with taijutsu and can kill relatively easy. on the contrary comparing them both was the most accurate to do. minato didn't use your fanfic tactic, he didn't do shit until Ay came practically near his face, logically if he'd tried to do the samething to guy, it'd only get him killed. lol as for "protecting" his teammates, they already left lol. good try thou.
