due to popular request, here it is.
She wore a night gown to bed, Dan notes. They usually slept in their birthday suits.
“What war?” she says, concerned.
“It was a long time ago...”
“Ok...stay in bed, honey. I’ll go make some coffee. Dan...You can talk about anything with me.”
“I know, hun.”
Dan groggily lifts himself from under the covers and turns on his laptop. The load bar slowly fills up. Very slowly. Piece of shit, he thinks for the hundredth time. He had been meaning to get a new one for months. Then his eyes fall on a news article on NineMSN. He frowns. When Chasca returns, Dan beckons her to come to him.
“Look at this”, he says. “This is what I’m after. It’s been so long since there’s been some excitement in our lives.”
The article reads “Mysterious disappearances in the Outback: Bodies found mangled.”
Sources are sketchy but the police have not reported this as a homicide just yet. The victims appear to have suffered injuries more like an animal attack than the work of a serial killer. However, this is just a theory-
Chasca stops reading.
“Fun...” she says dryly.
“What do you think?” he says eagerly.
Chasca purses her lips.
“It could be dangerous...”
“At the least we should check it out.” Dan tries to convince her. “Maybe they missed something. I spent too long in the Army to let my skills dull. Maybe we can help people.”
Chasca’s shoulders drop in defeat.
“Alright but we aren’t going alone. Gather the whole team.”
Dan nods. “Alright, I’ll call them. We’ll leave in two days.”
Chasca sighs. Once Dan decided to do something, there was never any stopping him. She decides she’d go just to make sure nothing happened to him.
Chasca packs a tent into the van, when she hears the home phone ring. Dan, surprised anyone would be calling, answers.
“Hello?” he says. Only static answers him. The phone crackles and voices start coming through.
“Get-ses-here!”
“Hang on, you’re breaking up.” Dan exclaims.
The voice seems to get angrier.
“Damn it –nter!” Finally Dan recognises the accent.
“..Seth?”
“Idiot, get –re!”
Seth Feldman was a technician in Dan’s platoon, he remembers. Quite a genius but as time went by, they lost touch. Seth was also very nerdy and never participated in battles. As an engineer he worked on civil construction and electrical hardwiring.
“Who is it?” Chasca asks.
“Private Seth Feldman. He was in our platoon.”
Chasca smiles.
“I should have known. He sounds in trouble. Do you want to go check it out?”
Dan frowned. “From what I could make out, he seems to want us to go there anyway. Alright let’s take the detour.”
Several miles away, Matthew Wolfe stares at his laptop. He is ten years older. Grizzled, and hardened, though he retains his boyish good looks and wavy brown hair.
“Where are you?” He whispers. Whatever is on the laptop worries him. A beefy grey haired man enters the compound. Matt looks around to see his trusted second in command, former lieutenant Jack Thorne.
Jack growls. “Captain, our guy has reached the target building.”
Matt nods. “Good. I trust he is reliable…ish.” He chuckles. “We need to know what the good Sarge has been up to nowadays.”
“We have our orders.” Jack says. “He said there was ex-army inside, protecting the data most likely.”
“Who?” Matt wonders.
“Seth Feldman.”
Matt turns away. “I remember that kid. Good radio operator.” He suddenly looks troubled.
“Guess the old 3rd platoon is in for a reunion after 10 long years.”
