What I find interesting about the plot is that we go deeper in on the relationship between the Northern and the Southern Water tribe. It's one of those things you might have thought about briefly during TLA, but never got any attention because it wasn't relevant to the plot.

Also the focus on Aang's children is a nice chance of pace. It shows that even Aang had difficulties and his own problems while raising his children.

I think Korra's uncle is just power-hungry.

You don't need an army occupying a city to protect a place miles away in the middle of an extremely hostile environment.

Well as I said last week I don't think he is really evil, but that he simply is going to far in the means he uses for what he deems is a just cause. The South lost most of its spiritual connection, which is pretty much true, and to restore that connection the thinks that using his army is justified. But yeah he is going to far with that.
