If someone walks up to you and is about to punch you, what is the legal limit of what you can do to immediately end the situation? I'm not talking about punching back, or pushing back since that doesn't immediately end the situation. Is there a way to end the situation before you even get touched within legal bounds?

If it can be proven that he was intending to attack you then I think you can strike preemptively

You're allowed to attack if you're being attacked. As long as you don't overdo it, obviously.

That's how it is where I'm from, at least.

That doesn't end it immediately as he would strike back.

Something like a taser, or pepper spray, or intimation with fake weapons would work better. But are those legal?

if hes "about to punch you" well you have the option to walk away or run or call the cops or call for help.

if someone attacks you hit them back.

just note a person can assault you and you call the cops on them they can turn around and press charges on you and you would be facing assault and battery charges.

Basically as long as you have a lawyer who is good enough to prove that you believed your life was in danger, you can kill them.

Don't I have the absolute right to be untouched by any means necessary?

Well, not in danger but in danger of being injured. Is that alone enough? Some injuries are perminant. I would much rather the other person die instead of me receiving a scar, but I think that would be illegal.

Only if you believe the other person is intending lethal action. Otherwise basically anything other than lethal action on your part is allowed. For example, if the other person is intending to kill you, you have the right to kill them first (kind of obviously) however, if the other person is not intending to kill you, but intends to attack you brutally, you have the right to prevent it by any means necessary as long as you do not kill them.

Within reason, of course. Cutting their arms and legs off would not be legal. Anything that is not pre-meditated however, should be fine.

So like using a taser or non lethal projectile based guns would be ok?

What about brandishing a licensed firearm but only using it to scare?

I'm not talking about punching back, I'm talking about stopping the person in his tracks before he reaches you.

No one has the "absolute" right to be unharmed....

look its like this and this happens alot if someone broke into your home and you were in fear of your life and you attacked the person who broke into your home and he lives, he can press charges on you and most likely you would be convicted.

self defense is to protect yourself from bodily harm so even if someone did assault you out in public view you can attack them back to protect urself but you can end up in a court on account of assault even if you did not start it.

It depends on your age, most adults will serve time no matter what. Unless you take a beating then you can sue.

You can't really just end the situation, no matter what you do there will be an effect to the cause.

If you want the truth, the police don't even want you to touch them because you will get in trouble as well. But if he is trying to kill you, just punch him a bit. Don't overdo it though ~.~

Both.

no one should be harmed but that dont mean crap in a court of law

Maybe not legally, but morally, philosophically, you have an absolute right to be unharmed.

It is an absolute right, meaning that even if you are in a scenario where you can be hurt but not killed, you have the moral right to completely defend yourself.
