Genjutsu, or "Illusionary Technique" are techniques to be used in battle, similar to Ninjutsu and Taijutsu for example.
By executing a genjutsu, the user must use their chakra and sometimes hand-seals. So it's very similar to ninjutsu, in terms of use in combat. The big difference however, is that genjutsu attacks the opponents mind, instead of it's body(like ninjutsu does).

By manipulating the chakra flows in the opponents brain/mind, genjutsu sets it's purpose. It put strains on one's mind, and senses. Uses as blindness, confusion, mind control, infusing psychological pain etc is what genjutsu does.

Examples of good genjutsu users in the manga are:

Itachi Uchiha - Izanagi

Sasuke Uchiha - Tsukyomi

Shisui Uchiha - Kotoamatsukami

Kurenai Yūhi - Demonic Illusion

Tayuya - Sound genjutsu

Secound Mizukage - Mirage techinque

Tobirama - Bringer of darkness

Yeah by disrupting the chakra flow inside the body!

Can be done by using Chidori Nagashi or Genjutsu Kai! But mostly Genjutsu Kai is used to break out of genjutsu!

( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion.

Baaaaaaaaaka~ *hits you with a stick*

Disrupting your chakra flow is one main way only! And in the case of Nagashi, a lot of other techniques fit the criteria as well, what you seek is a technique that is a full body surge i.e. is released from every inch of your body, and techniques like that will help release you from Genjutsu's of one rank less then said technique (e.g. Nagashi can be used to release up to B-rank gens).

There is another way which isn't based on chakra flow, do you know what it is?

Well done exactly, yes!

I'll save you the trouble and explain another, sometimes overlooked part of Genjutsu.

Genjutsu Layering is casting a secondary illusion upon your first one, with the resultant effect being a combination of said two illusions. The rules are: 1, the secondary illusion that you cast cannot be of a higher rank than the first, if so it will simply overtake the first one; 2, you are only able to stack up to two illusions, no more; 3, if both illusions are of the same rank, they cancel each other and nothing happens; and 4, the highest ranked illusion (so your first one) will be the overall rank of the entire illusion.

Any questions?

For now I just want you to perform the illusions as if you were to cast it on a random opponent.

( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.

A simple illusion, by channelling your chakra throughout your body, into the air and into your opponents mins, you're effectively casting an illusion on him where you can change the environment around him. Albeit to a limit, you can for example make it so that he thinks the ground beneath him turns into sand, but you can't add extra features in. For example, you can't simply make a fireball appear into the air that descends down towards him. Though I love the fact that this technique requires no hand signs, meaning a normal opponent won't be aware of being caught within the illusion until after the effects have hit in.

No Sensei I have no questions.

(Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings Technique

Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.

Performing the Jutsu

I focus my charka in my body. Once I have enough charka I focus in on your clone. As I focus on him I send my charka into his brain. This causes the clone to suddenly see a waterfall instead of the usual hidden leaf forest due to my chakra having control on his sense of perception.

Advantages

  • It can fool the opponent into thinking there is another terrain rather than the one you are truly on.
  • It gives you some time to do something, while your opponent is distracted.
Disadvantages

  • Its low rank means it can easily be overpowered by another genjutsu.
  • It only changes the terrain, nothing more.
How you would use it in battle

The best way I can think is in a situation where the opponent may be in need of a water source. He needs to perform the water jutsu but needs a water source nearby. What I do is cast the genjutsu, making him think he has a water source, but unfortunately it would result useless for him and it would be beneficial for me, since it will give me enough time for an opening.

How you would counter it

I guess unless you've learned Kai! The only way is to inflict damage on yourself, though it's not really that necessary on this technique, since it only changes the terrain.

No need for a template anymore, I've gotten rid of that. When it comes to Genjutsu's I just want you to perform it and think of reasons as to how you'd figure out you've been placed under an illusion. Because you can't just say "Oh I happen to use Kai" randomly you know? It needs logic and with simple, but detailed explanations of the techniques you'll gain a better understanding of how illusions work. Always think to yourself, what senses have been affected and what haven't? What's changed from before which shouldn't have? As we progress through you'll come to understand but anyways, wonderful for your first technique.

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal Escape
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.

For this technique, perform a string of 5 different hand signs *shows* and in doing so, you induce an illusion upon your opponent that you simply vanish; dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals then begin to encircle him, swirling around him thus effectively hindering his vision from the battlefield. A simple genjutsu, though if used accurately could be the set up for a surprise attack, or could also be used for means of escape. Though the five hand signs is a let down for the technique.

Performing the Jutsu

I mold my charka as I do five hand seals. Once I have enough charka and one seal to go I see my opponent taking an offensive stance. I then focus in on my opponent allowing me to insert my charka into his brain. This would cause him to see flower petal all around him and lose concentration, giving me an opening to attack him.

Using the jutsu in Battle:- I would use it to confuse a really low experienced/weak opponent since the jutsu itself is just D ranked. Because its low ranked its better to use it as a diversion rather then a front line attack. When i will perform this jutsu my opponent will see flower petal all around him and he will lose concentration, giving me an opening to attack him.

Question:- Can this jutsu be use to defend against an incoming attack? If yes, then up-to what rank can it defend?

You've asked me to continue, hopefully you told Kerrah about me taking it over.

BTW as of this moment since you havn't gone far into it. Everything you've learned thus far is voided. [Can't use techniques until i have covered them].

I am thinking about having you do the "what is genjutsu" all over again but I won't i guess. I ask general questions. Lets back track to the release of genjutsu.

Tell me, young fella, how do you release from a genjutsu?

  • It is done by altering the balance between physical and spiritual energies in our chakra by disturbing your spiritual energy.
  • This is done by sheer will power.
  • Its done by forcefully creating a surge of chakra in your body by spiking your spiritual energy.
  • It can be done in 2 ways: through a technique named Kai and through other techniques, like Nagashi, that will produce a high enough surge of chakra through your body.
Altering the chakra flow through the introduction of foreign chakra. This can be done by an ally or by entering for example, sage mode or being a jinchuriki. The truth is that as foreign chakra enters our system or another energy (natural energy), our chakra flow becomes altered and thus releases from the genjutsu.

Alright, so now that you know how and why it can be broken, genjutsu that is, the most important part is to know that is genjutsu. How do you know that is genjutsu when you are in place of genjutsu if you are not a sensor or have doujutsu?

You had all this time @___@ you basically look for stuff thats suspicious like if the gen that has snakes appear around out of nowhere and I didnt even do a hand sign or anything that would be suspicious.

( Genjutsu: Kasumi ) - Illusion Technique: Servant
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: 20

*shows you the hand seal* Do the handseal and throw a paper bomb at my clone but, trap my clone in a genjutsu where they believe the paper bomb is actually a clone going towards him then have the paper bomb explode when it gets near my clone.

( Kasumi Jūsha no Jutsu ) - Mist Servant Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.

Trap my clone in a genjutsu were they see numerous clones of you that emerge from the ground and everywhere else. If my clone tries to hit the illusion clones they should multiply to him.
