The purpose of it could be many. Either to cover up a illusion with another illusion, in order to make them more succesful, to delay the opponents actions or to confuse him.
To add to this, another purpose is to make it hard to know/understand that the user in genjutsu, making things more realistic in the illusion.

@ Reborn, Decent? >_<

In essence, it all truly depends on what type of genjutsu user you are. I don't think either of you have had Scorps train you in either gen or NB Genjutsu so you may not know the answer to this question. Do you know what types of genjutsu users there are?

I know that. Torturers, decievers and militia. I'm quite aware of the concept of torturers and decievers but I don't understand the militia. They basically use genjutsu to distract their opponents with illusions while in reality they conduct their attacks. Correct?

Cobalt is correct. The three types are torturers, decievers, and militia.

The first two are rather self explanitory, the torturers are those who are keen on illusions that are designed to be less descrite and rather obvious, however they cause hellish pain that would generally leave the body incapable of movement. Paralysis through intense pain or destruction of limbs, hitting vitals that shut down the body. Tearing apart flesh, organs, creating situations that cause physiological shock like suffocation, etc. Voodoo Headless Chicken would probably be one of the best examples of a torturer's genjutsu

Decievers are self explanitory as well. They primarily utilize techinques that focus on decieving your opponent. Descrite techniques that are meant to fool the senses into either (a) making the surrounding enviornment seem as it it's unaffected while in actuality it is, (b) create a situation of false reassurance for your opponent, (c) hindering the senses in some way to prevent them from sensing something an oncoming technique. These techniques are typically designed to be more hidden and difficult to figure out for the sake of maintaining the illusion.

Torturers and Decievers attempt to maintain their illusions through their own methods. The former tries to prevent any movement from happening for a shinobi to disrupt flow through pain or genjutsu kai. This is presuming there are no summons or comrades/clones around to help. Decievers try to maintain their illusions by making sure their techniques are unseen/undetected therefore the opponent would have no inscentive to attempt any methods of release. Time Delay is perhaps one of the best deception genjutsu constructed that I've seen

Now Militia on the other hand, they are a combination of the two mentioned above. They use both methods of torture and deception. Depending on the situation they'll go for torture or deception or they may go for a combination of both. Quite recently I've been prone to the milita type. However I focus more on delaying my oppponent. Most genjutsu if not all are designed to delay your opponent in some manor for you to get the upper hand. Or rather, I should say confuse them to muffle their ability to react. With my genjutsu usage though, as most who have fought me, I fancy torturing to delay my opponents and cover fire/cover techniques to help me maintain the illusion while I go for another kill...doesn't work so much or at least when I've tried it, it doesn't appear to work.

So back to the initial question, as a genjutsu user what your goal is, for casting genjutsu and layering genjutsu, is dependent on your type as a genjutsu user and what you're going for. This question will probably more difficult for you guys to answer since you're not too seasoned in genjutsu, I mean you two don't seem like the type of people to use genjutsu regurally or enough so to deduce what you guys specialize in. When I first began my NB genjutsu training with Scorps I found myself more of a deciever, though I found out that wasn't the case. Upon paying more attention to my battles and genjutsu usage, I found I was more keen on torture. In order to tell your type, you're really have to look at how you use genjutsu.

Well, I don't use genjutsu too often but when I do I use it to delay the actions of my opponent, make them struggle with getting out of the single/double illusion(s) while I launch my offensive and try to gain the upper hand. I consider myself miltia when it comes to genjutsu though I'm heading more to the deciever side of the category. I like to confuse my opponent with simple illusions which alter their perception, delaying their actions and giving me a window of opportunity.

Hmmm, maybe I am a deceiver. Whenever using a genjutsu, my upper focus is on placing the genjutsu on a way that it wouldn't be easy at all to figure it out. This is either from the genjutsu itself (that is very realistic and wouldn't be able to be detected easily because it could be done in real.) or the situation on the battlefield. My purpose meanwhile using a genjutsu is to delay my opponent within the genjutsu as far as possible which is made by realistic illusions and thus giving me the upper hand. I don't really care about the damage though.

So you see, the purpose of casting genjutsu, layering techniques on, etc, is all dependant on the style you use and what you're trying to acomplish with your genjutsu. I believe a strong genjutsu user can make use of all three types; be a deciever, a torturer, and a militia illusionist. In essence, the latter of the three types involves both of the formers but I see each of these as three different extremes. A deciever and tortuer excell in that one area and their focus is directed, while a melitia also excells in decieving and torturing but isnt focused directly on that and they may try to even combine the two. That being said, certian situations call for a focus some time times which may be deception, torture, or a combination of both.

You guys have a clear understanding of how you'd go about using your perscribed titles, however you don't use genjutsu all that much to really get a feel for that, however I have a final test for you guys in mind which should help you both out with that but that comes at the end. Any questions you have before we continue?

Alright, so we know genjutsu isn't something that harms you physically but rather mentally. However, does that mean a genjutsu is any less dangerous or real than ninjutsu? We're going to get into stratigic uses for genjutsu. What I mean is, we're going to look at genjutsu techniques, break them down and decode what is the best situation for you to use them in. As well, we're going to talk about, for the sake of custom genjutsu, how to go about creating genjutsu.

Now we already talked about casting genjutsu based on specific taste, now I want you to tell me purposes for genjutsu. Tell everything you percieve genjutsu is meant to do regardless of the type of user you are. What does genjutsu have the capability of doing to your opponent?

I see genjutsu as a set of skills that serves purpose to distract the opponent, confuse him and delay his actions. The various types deal various effects. Some genjutsu are purely illusionary, with the effects purely illusionary and those are usually used to delay the actions. Some genjutsu affect the opponent in their mind whereas the consequences are reflected to reality, for example paralyzing genjutsu. Stress on the opponents mind, damage etc.
