History:
Family history:
50 years before Kurapika's birth his grandfather left Kirigakure and took over 50 families with him, some went with him in escape of the bloody mist's militarily ruling regime and it's bloody methods, while some of them were escaping the consent conflict with the Kaguya clan.
They set sails to a deserted island called the Kurta island, the island was far way from the Kirigakure and had extreme natural defenses which kept it from being invaded by Kirigakure or any other shinobi village, this blessed them with a temporary peace which lasted for thirty five years, in that time the Kurta clan had abandoned the arts of ninja as they lost the feel of insecurity since no one else was ever able to reach the island, and by the time Kurapika was born people completely forgot about ninjutsu, as even his dad, a descendant from a Dark Release user never got to learn dark release as his grandfather thought that such powers were only to bring chaos to the island in the future

Early childhood:
when Kurapika was born the island was starting to attract the shinobi world's attention as it grew in numbers and needed trading affairs with the rest of the world, his father inherited the leadership of the island and it's residents started to be known as the Kurta tribe despite the fact that they didn't share a bloodline, and the island welcomed the naming.
Many merchants and travelers came to the village being attracted by its vast resources and it's adventurous nature, and as the island's reputation started to spread like fire, the villagers felt danger approaching as they knew how the shinobi villages were desperately in search for resources to support their wars, so they decided to start teaching the basics ninjutsu again as a method of self defense against any possible attack from the outside, of course the villagers weren't aware that there was more to ninjutsu than what they were taught, anyhow Kurapika perfected the little he was taught to their possible limits.
When Kurapika reached the age of twelve, the inevitable happened, and the village was attacked by a group of S-ranked criminals who called themselves the Genei Ryodan. The Genei Ryodan killed everyone in the island, Kurapika's father was able to save Kurapika by making him lose consciousness and hiding him inside a secret chamber underneath their house.
When Kurapika regained consciousness he woke up to a nightmare incomparable to anything his mind could have ever imagined, he woke up to a sight too intense to be a nightmare and too shocking for him to accept as a reality. The sight of the ground covered with the bodies of his comrades was forever carved in his memories.
The dawn of the Darkness:
After going through the experience of witnessing the fall of his comrades and the sight of their dead bodies covering the island's ground, Kurapika entered a state of shock and denial for weeks until it finally hit him, he was the last survivor of the Kurta tribe, And it was his duty to restore the honor of his fallen comrades and avenging their death, but now he was faced with a new dilemma which was the fact that the Genei Ryodan were able to kill his entire tribe in a matter of minutes, so how could he possible hope to defeat a group with such monstrous powers, on his own. This dilemma troubled Kurapika for as long as it took him to realize that no matter what plan he comes up with, he has nothing left for him in this village and must leave it as soon as possible since he had a long journey awaiting him and no time for him to waste, and while going through the items in his father's office, he found a number of scrolls well hidden in secret vaults, they spoke of what they called "nature manipulation" and that there were different kinds of ninjutsu based on the elements of the nature, by reading the scrolls he learnt that the limit of powers one's chakra can give him surpass the basics he learnt by far.
According to the scrolls, one could easily bread fire, create giant whirlpools, manipulate the earth, make a giant tornado out of a single breath, or a strike his enemies with lightning from the palm of his hands, all these powers seemed unrealistic to Kurapika at first, it was as if these were powers only a God could accomplish, but then again annihilating a whole tribe in a matter of minutes also seemed like something only a God could do, and to give it a further thought, why would his father be hiding these very old scrolls if it wasn't for their importance, and the fact that the basics he already learnt were also included there only made it more believable. Among these scrolls Kurapika found one unique looking scroll that stood out from the bunch, it was as if it was meant to deliver his attention to it, when Kurapika opened the scroll it revealed a note hidden within its rolls, the note said:
"Hopefully the one reading this note is you, Kurapika. If so, then I must have left this world already, that being due to either an anticipated attack on the village, which I seem to have failed to prevent the village from being sucked into the darkness using diplomatic means, or I've died a normal death and you are to succeed me and save this village before greed tears it apart. Use the scrolls you've found to learn how to defend the tribe, even if the tribe is gone defend what it stood for, our island was made as bright spot of peace within this dark jungle of war, you must defend it no matter what, if it get's defeated once avenge it, make this spot of light dominate the darkness, and the only way you may defeat darkness is for you to control it!"
Kurapika quickly tossed the note his dad left him and read through the scroll, Kurapika saw how powerful the Dark Release was and saw what he thought was his only hope in it, it could easily destroy most technique of fuuton, raiton and katon, he thought that was the advantage he needed, it was the way he could claim back the tribe's honor, his honor, and bring destruction upon those who caused him so much pain. Kurapika quickly through all the scrolls into a bag and readied a boat to leave the Island, on that day he set sail without looking back.
Conquering the darkness:
Kurapika's plan was to first go back to Kirigakure to get the proper teaching for the techniques in the scrolls and also gather any information he could on the group that attacked the Island.
Using a fishing boat he took from the Island he reached Kirigakure, Kurapika was somewhat surprised when he entered the village as the image he had in his head of Kirigakure didn't match at all what he saw, later on he learned that the Kaguya clan was completely annihilated and that the dreadful Mizukage Yagura no longer ruled Kirigakure, but didn't really feel any joy hearing that, It was as if he abandoned all relation he had with this world, all he could think of was how to get revenge, Kurapika didn't miss the chance to ask about the attackers of his village, a merchant told him that he heard that the Genei Ryodan were the ones who attacked the Kurta Island a few weeks ago, Kurapika tried to find any information about the Genei Ryodan but all he was told was that their Symbol was a Spider with 12 legs and that the ones who could obtain information on them were the village's shinobi.
At this point Kurapika joined the academy and took the graduation test which he passed with ease because of the little training he received back in the island, afterwards Kurapika was assigned to a sensei called Mizuken who taught him the element of Raiton which he told him was necessary for him to learn along katon before he can possibly learn dark release, and after long months of learning Raiton Kurapika was one step ahead in his journey and only one element away from learning dark release, but Mizuken was promoted later on to the village's council and couldn't finish Kurapika's training due to all his duties, so then Kurapika was back to searching for a sensei to teach him katon and perhaps Dark Release afterwards when he met Biscuit Krueger, At that time Biscuit already had a student but agreed to teaching Kurapika alongside him. perhaps she emphasized with his goal. she taught him Katon in a relatively small amount of time, but she apologized as she couldn't teach him Dark Release, for she wasn't of the bloodline, although she did share some valuable information with him, she told him that the Genei Ryodan originate from Amegakure, the village hidden in the rain, the most mysterious and troubled village in the ninja world. Luckily for Kurapika next year's chunin exams were to take part in Amegakure, Kurapika blindly decided to take the chunin exams without giving it a second thought. Biscuit tried to convince Kurapika not to be rash and wait until he receives the proper training before going after the Genei Ryodan, but Kurapika believed that one year is all he had, he didn't think of it as a choice, it just became an undeniable truth, he was to learn all he could before the chunin exams.
In the time Kurapika had left he received some training in doton from a sensei who was known for taking his time when teaching and his overall laziness. however, Kurapika didn't have the time for perfectionism and had to move on to another sensei. Following that Kurapika met a man named Kaito who was skilled with Katana and looked like a samurai, Kaito finished Kurapika's Raiton and taught him some fuuton, when Kaito learned about Kurapika's intention to take the chunin exams, he told him to keep an eye for his friend Gon, he told him that he'll most likely meet him there. Kurapika didn't show much interest in the matter but offered to send Kaito's regards if he met him.
Kaito advised Kurapika to seek the teaching of Squala, a dark skinned man who lived on chicken wings and a mysterious drink he called 'koolaid'. he willingly taught Kurapika what he could in doton.
After a long and tiring year, Kurapika took the first ship going to Amegakure, the ship was full of young shinobi going there to take the chunin exams, all they talked of was the rumors surrounding the village hidden in the rain and how dangerous it was, Kurapika wasn't interested in the rumors regarding the dangers and the chunin exams anticipated difficulty, but was most interested in the rumors about the political unrest happening in the village and the supposed role the Genei Ryodan are playing in it, some rumors went as far as saying that the Genei Ryodan took control of Amegakure.
After giving it some thought, Kurapika decided to leave Kirigakure after the Chunin exams and join Amegakure in an attempt to infiltrate the Genei Ryodan's stronghold.
The ship's captain kept an eye on Kurapika after noticing how eager he was to gather information on the Genei Ryodan, the ship's captain later on learned Kurapika's name, surprisingly the captain knew Kurapika's father. The captain knowing that Kurapika is the son of his old friend, and knowing of the Kurta clan's massacre, he volunteered to train Kurapika to help further advance in the path he chose. Kurapika happily accepted the offer and asked the captain to finish teaching him doton, so he did.

During the long journey on the ship, Kurapika met a kid named Gon. Gon seemed like the kind of simpleton one would once in a while, he tried to break up every fight the happened on the ship and helped around the docks without being required to. Gon was traveling with an older man named Leorio, who seemed to degrade Gon's way of being unconditionally kind to others. Leorio believed and would openly say that the world revolves around money. Kurapika found himself siding with Gon in his heart.
One day the captain of the ship asked the three of them the reason they're going through the path of shinobi, he asked them what was their goals. Gon jumped into answering first by saying that he wanted to become a hunter like his dad so one day he might be able to find him. Kurapika calmly said that he wishes to avenge his clan, not explaining further. Leorio laughed at the other two and shouted “Money, Money, It's all about the money, with money you can do anything, you can achieve anything, all I want is money.” Kurapika whispered quietly, “What a fool”. Leorio immediately looked at Kurapika and told him to speak out loud if he was a man. Kurapika answered by telling him that an ignorant like him isn't worthy. Leorio lost control of his emotions and attacked Kurapika, Kurapika dodged the the attack and withdraw his two blades and Leorio used his briefcase as a weapon and sprinted towards Kurapika with a killing intent.
The chunin exams:
During the chunin exams, Kurapika allied with Amegakure in hope to reach those responsible for the Kurta massacre. however, Kurapika is yet to tell that story. "perhaps in an update"

Other
Weaponry:
Chains: Kurapika's main weapon is his chains. He keeps five of them with him at all times, all chains are attached to his fingers with the help of rings stylized as a chained glove extending from his sleeve. The chains are made of steel so naturally they cannot be cut by normal weapons. furthermore, their flexibility makes it harder even for chakra infused weapons to cut them. The chains extend till mid range and have metallic weights, blades and hooks attached to their end which makes it easier to hurl them around. Kurapika has shown great mastery with the use of his chains, he can use his fingers like a puppeteer and move them around with slight movements. His mastery goes as far as being to able launch the chains in 5 different directions at the same time. Apart from that he is capable of flowing his chakra through them to enhance their abilities. The lower part of the rings is made of rubber which prevents kurapika from being electrocuted dare the opponent tries to use lightning for his scape.
