well there were hints and forshadowing , the wheelchair scene at the end of season, the letters that korra was only sending asami, the blush korra had when asami gave her a compliment, the little arguement they had when asami told korra she went and saw her father because she didn't want to see asami get hurt all over again by her father,

though i can say these hints are easly not to notice and i nderstand why you didn't see it coming, the creators couldn't go full fedge because nick would have allowed it
