Reading the profile on Danzo on the Naruto Wikia, allegedly in the Jin no Sho, Kishi's early concept art for Itachi was supposed to look like this.

Jeezus! He looks terrible. I don't get a true shinobi/loving brother vibe from this Itachi. Rather a creep villain vibe, who would try to panty peep all the girls in Konoha. Or maybe a character in a fight or another shonen manga.

Also the page said that some of Itachi's inital designs were used in crafting Danzo. Most notably the 'X' on his chin.

Be thankful for what we have.

Try every anime cliche wanderer ever. Ryu (Street Fighter), Domon (G Gundam), Kenshin (Samurai X).

He'd probably have a red headband if Kishi kept that design.

How early though? Before or after Sasuke was created?

Law was not created back then or not introduced... I think. So if it's a copy he source should be older.

Not a bad design actually, but he doesn't look like Sasuke at all, although his current design looks too much like Sasuke, something in between might have been good.

Originally, that character was named "Bruno" and was supposed to be the leader of some antagonistic group living in Konoha that would bother Naruto. (Hence the bandit-like design).

Then, Kishimoto's editors wanted Sasuke and Kishimoto decided Bruno wasn't needed- he just edited this design to fit a cool, older brother archetype and changed the name (Itachi=Weasel---> known to be traitorous in Japanese lore) to something fitting an elder sibling of Sasuke for the story.

That is why I safeguarded my post by saying "allegedly" this was from the databook. Thanks for the info though.

He does look like a bandit. Need to add Yamcha to my list of wandering types with 'X's' on their faces.

If Kishi always planned for Itachi to be a heroic character from the shadows, why name him Itachi? They're symbols of misfortune/bad luck in Japanese Folklore. Who names their kid something like that?
