Gaara wasn't even able to hold Kimimaro with his sand, no way Kage Mane is gonna stop him...
Shikamaru might be ALOT smarter, but Kimimaro is still at too much advantage both offensively and defensively.

You know Shikamaru would be able to come up with something. It's just a matter of whether he'd be able to survive the brute skill and power of Kimimaro long enough to utilise his strategy- which would normally seem impossible. But didn't Hidan & Kakuzu seem impossible too?

Hidan had 1 ability, and Shikamaru lost his captain in the fight before he could figure out Hidans ability completely(or two if you count immortality).
He had what 2-3 days to prepare a tactic against those two, and he had Inos and Choujis abilities in the calculations as well.
Shikamarus main ability is his intellect and Kage Mane and its variants.
He could probably come up with a tactic to capture Kimimaro, but he wouldn't be able to hold him when Kimimaro goes curse mark level 2. And Shikamarus shadow stitching wouldn't work either, which is one of his only offensive jutsus, because Kimimaro would just cover his body in body mass under his skin(like he did against desert burial). Shadow Neck binding wouldn't work either, because Kimimaros curse mark level 2 would break out of it, or just cover the inside of his throat with bone so that he wouldn't get choked by it.
Please do share with us how Shikamaru would defeat Kimimaro.

Only thing Shikamaru is better at is his intelligence.. which is only 1.5 points anyway.
All the other ones, Kimimaro is better. And Shikamarus stats are from two years later, which he had two years to improve upon. Kimimaros stats are pre-shippuuden. Kimimaros NINJUTSU is even better than Shikamarus, and Kimimaro is a taijutsu user...

plus kimimaro is to fast for him and if gaaras sand back than couldnt hold him how could the shadows do it? and if shikamaru has prep time maybe but if they come into battle with no knowledge kimimaro wins waaaaaay to fast

Let me share this a bit, remember that power is not everything even in Naruto’s World, intelligences would conquered power.
We’ve seen several time of Shikamaru’s fight and logically we will said that shikamaru was out of power from his opponent, for example when he face Temari with her powerful wind blast using her fan during that time people would say that shikamaru would lost, but one way or another shikamaru came out with something tactical to defeat his opponent.
The second fight when Shikamaru face Tayuya (Preshippuuden) we all know that Tayuya had also CM and she must active her 2nd level CM to unleash from Shikamaru Shadow Neck Bind and we also know that Tayuya have cast Shikamaru into a Genjutsu and once again by that time we will concluded that shikamaru wouldn’t bear against Tayuya, but the fact is Shikamaru once against break that theory and came up with something an effective strategies to defeat his opponent
Then the fight which we all familiar when Shikamaru against Hidan= Powerful, Immortality, Brute, and smart also (but not too smart) he (Hidan) managed to catch Ni Yugito the 2 tails jinchuuriki and he also could defeat the famous Chiryoku, but like Mugi said Shikamaru would came out with some strategy to defeat Hidan even though needs 2 days and in strange way to do it.
So… you may get your own conclusion with that fact, Could shikamaru defeat Kimimaro… if Shikamaru only rely on his Shadow tech I will say no he can’t defeat Kimimaro, but we all know that Shikamaru ability (or all the Nara’s ability) not only manipulate their shadow but they (the Nara’s) also known with their great intelligences, good at tactics and strategy, he would came out with some weird strategy and tactics to defeat Kimimaro.
