i dont think sai was ever an jounin..... since he didnt know naruto or sakura from the academy i think that says he didnt go through the traditional training most ninja go through.
He probably was always apart of the root anbu training division his whole life till he actually became an anbu.

Personally I think that Sai could pull it off. But It would be much more difficult for him if kid kakashi had his sharingan. I think it would be a good match. but Sai takes it for sure.
