*lifts sword above my head and slashes it down at you*
*As your slash comes down, I having my left foot planted firmly, push off, sending myself very quickly to my right, causing your blade to come down by my left side, but missing me.*

Now, that's the base, true movement of a sidestep, though it won't often be what you do in a battle.

What you'll do, generally, will be a sidestep + pivot, or what I just call a regular sidestep for reasons we'll get to in a bit.

But, yes, the basic sidestep is just literally stepping to the side.

Now, if you understood that, I'm not going to make you practice - I'll move on to the sidestep + pivot.

Ready?

*lifts sword above head and slashes down*
*As your blade comes down, I push off with my left leg, causing me to move to my right, and in the same movement, I pivot on my right foot, causing my body to now run perpendicular to your own instead of parallel, even if offset to the right.*

Do you understand what I just did, or was that not very clear?

Ok, I'll give it a shot ^_^

*As you begin to slash down, I push off with my left foot and keep my right foot planted. I turn to my left with the heel of my right foot, then plant both of my feet making your sword miss me.*

*I stop my attack, keeping it from hitting you.*

That would've been good, but you did it in reverse - by keeping your right foot planted, and pushing with your left, you would spin clockwise from your position - into the slash. You should have kept your left foot planted and pushed with your right.

But, you have the right concept.

Ready to try again? ^_^

Again, close.

When you pivot, your point is to allow the blade to come past you.

With a diagonal slash, you always want to turn towards the direction the slash started (since I started at the right, pivot right). This sounds odd, but by doing that, you'll let the blade pass you before it extends far enough to actually hit you. If you turn the other way, the blade will be extended and hit you.

The same concept goes for when you actually step.

Here, try it out on me with a few diagonal slashes so I can show you.

*wields the bokken with both hands and slashes from your right shoulder down to your left hip*
*Since your slash came towards my right shoulder, I push off with my left foot and lift my right, pushing me towards my right, and as I turn in my air so that my right side would be perpendicular to your plane, your attack would miss me.*

See how that works?
