I think Gai could last longer than 5 minutes of running through Obito and keeping him intangible til he's reached his limit..
Once 5 minutes is up he will hit him .. his speed will keep Obito uncertain of when Gai will attack. Probably wouldn't work though.

The 8th gate is called the gate of death, as soon as it's open, he'll die pretty much right away. That's why he needed to kill madara as soon as possible before he collapses and died. The reason why he didn't die until he used those techniques was for us readers to see what hes capable of. Point is, He died roughly in 2-5 minutes.
