What we've been given is:



Hashirama is dead, no reason for his death has been given at all

We know that Kakuzu has fought with Hashirama, but the outcome of the battle was never discussed or confirmed.

Kakuzu was alive before Naruto killed him.




Based on the information we've been given from the series, the only logical conclusion to reach would be that Kakuzu killed Hashirama in battle.
