As I and govind madhu said, genjutsu is the basic of sharingan. And a mangekyou sharingan user could certainly use it.

Also don't forget that Gai should stop and concentrate to do the gate thing.

ok, why didn´t sasuke use genjutsu on gaara? why didn´t kakashi use genjutsu on zabuza? why didn´t kakashi use genjutsu on all of his opponents than? tell me WHY?

no i´m not, you guys are underestimating gai´s speed, + i never said he can open all of them at once, he can "only" open 6 of them at once, so get out, + have you ever seen kakashi use kamui at the start of the battle? the answer is NO

Opening of More Than One Gate at a Time

*Although not actually shown, when Lee opened the third gate straight to the fifth, Kakashi was amazed and said it should not be possible for someone on his level. and gai actually used this technique, although it wasn't stated as a technique.*

One can be trained to open more than one gate at a time through intense training and constant use of the gates. A User can open up to six gates at a time but only if they are a EIG Master. They have to be an EIG Master to be able to perform this (in the manga this was shown possible by Guy).
-It takes around a second to open each gate unless the user has undertaken Special Gates Training and therefore can open up to 6 gates in around 1 second.
-Must be at Least Sannin Rank
-Must be a EIG Master

-Anyone who has the gates for 4 months already is an 8 gates master (others have to do training)
-The test is a taijutsu battle judged by three EIG masters if all three give their consent (all three agree you are skilled enough to learn the gates) you can be trained in them (or make a lee/guy bio)
-once you fit the requirements for EIG master you will be given a test from an EIG master if you pass you become an EIG master
